Edgar D Mitchell – the sixth man to walk on the moon – made the staggering claim in an email sent in January 2015, just months before his death.He told John Podesta, now the chairman of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, the Pope is "aware" of extra terrestrial intelligence (ETI).Discussing an upcoming meeting, Mr Mitchell wrote: "My Catholic colleague Terri Mansfield will... bring us up to date on the Vatican's awareness of ETI."
The message is one of 2,000 emails released by WikiLeaks last night – with many more disclosures expected to follow.Mrs Clinton's campaign responded by claiming Russian operatives are using WikiLeaks to "meddle in our election" and help get Donald Trump elected.A spokesman also attacked WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, saying he is intent on "damaging" the Democratic candidate.

In another leaked exchange with Mr Podesta, the late austronaut warned of the potential war could break out in space. He wrote: "We're arguably closer than ever to war in space. Most satellites orbiting Earth belong to the US, China and Russia."And recent tests of anti-satellite weapons don't exactly ease the scare factor."

Mrs Clinton has vowed to "get to the bottom" of questions about UFOs and open up the mysterious X Files if she is elected in November.Speaking earlier this year, the former First Lady said: "I would like us to go into those files and hopefully make as much of that public as possible."If there is something there, unless it's a threat to national security, I think we ought to share it with the public."
