Smiles all round as Rockdale City Suns' Baturay Akin shown celebrating in style after his goal against Sydney Olympic during round 6 of the NSW Premier League Rockdale City Suns’ goalscoring sensation Baturay Akin recently endured one of the finest weeks of his playing career after he notched up the only goal of the match in his club’s 1-0 monumental victory against former NSL giants Sydney Olympic at Belmore Sports Ground in round 6. The 25-year-old was the talk of the town as he added to his goalscoring tally to three for the year; not bad for a player coming off the bench in most of his games played so far.
Akin’s excitement in scoring showed via his celebration as he ripped off his shirt much to the delight of the many travelling Suns fans who witnessed what was a huge win for the former Super League Premiers.
“Words cannot describe the feeling I had when I put the ball in the back of the net against Olympic.
“It was unbelievable, I have never celebrated that way in reference to taking off my jersey but there’s always a first for everything.
“To score in such a huge match in front of a great crowd and my parents as well was a dream come true for me.”
Akin stated that his goal against the Blues was something he owed to coach Mile Todoroski who gave him his first start for 2010.
“That goal was a confidence booster for me and it was also for Mile to show him that I am ready to win a spot in the starting line-up.
“The game was like a Grand-Final to us and the team played well to get the vital three points which lifted us to fifth spot on the NSW Premier League ladder.”
The well known ‘impact player’ held nothing but praise for Todoroski who has assisted in Akin’s development as a player.
“There’s something about him that he does which brings out the best in all the players and that is what he has done with me. He teaches us to believe in ourselves and that we have nothing to lose and to go out and do it for the club.
“He understands all our capabilities as players, what our strengths and weaknesses’ are and works with us to push ourselves to the limit.
“I can safely say that he has been one of the best coaches I have ever worked with.”
The Suns have had a remarkable start to the season and have etched themselves into the top five of the NSW Premier League competition something Akin hopes can be the drive to continue pushing Rockdale to the limit.
“It has been a great start to the season as I believe the players have worked really hard along with Mile to get to where we are today.
“We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves as it is a long season but we’ve managed to hold our own so far in the NSW Premier League.
“Our fitness has been a huge difference I can see that which has worked in our favour as well as a number of the players proving people wrong that we do belong in the NSW Premier League which has certainly fired them all up.”
Having mentioned that Akin has already hit the back of the net three times this year, it was his finishing that the striker had worked on during pre-season in slowly perfecting it into his game.
“I work very hard on getting this right each training session but I also do a lot of extras.
“My main focus as a player on the pitch is to score goals and to assist my teammates, I know it is a lot of hard work but one of my aims this year is to be top scorer of the competition as well.
“So far things have worked well for me, I know that I had to prove to people that I deserved a starting role in the squad and in turn this has been down to me pushing myself in areas I needed work in.”
The current atmosphere at the Suns is electric with the former FC Bossy Liverpool marksman believing that the current climate is assisting in the team’s progress towards the top.
“You need to be around a good environment with people working towards one purpose and that is to achieve bigger and better things and that is what is currently happening at the club.
“You could tell the atmosphere was great from our first game that we played at our new ground in pre-season where a huge crowd came out to support us.
“It is now about consolidating our spot in the NSW Premier League and we have the vibe to move forward for this to happen.”
The Suns are back at home this Sunday and face the West Sydney Berries a game which Akin is hoping for three further points to swing the way of Rockdale.
“After Monday’s match we are hoping that the good crowd that came to support us at Belmore will be there to cheer us against the Berries.
“We want to keep our 100% record at home in tact but understand that no every game will be easy for us as it only gets harder as the season wears on.
“Both sides are on a high as we are both backing up from recent victories but it will be an important game for us to continue our good run so taking the three points is vital.
“By no means will we make this easy for the Berries as they will be in for a tough match against us and I hope to also do my job and that’s to score goals against them this Sunday.”
Rockdale City Suns face the West Sydney Berries this Sunday at 3pm at Bicentennial Park.
