Geelong soccer: Game called off after blackout

May 3rd, 2010

THE North Geelong Soccer Club's first State League One game underlights at Lara got off to a dark start on Friday.

A power surge caused a blackout 70 minutes into the under-21 match which forced the senior game against Malvern City to be abandoned.

Club president Joe Zilic said the unfortunate incident was disappointing given a massive crowd of more than 600. The surge disrupted power at the game and at surrounding light towers. A Powercor employee was called to fix the problem, which took an hour, but it was too late.

"They give you about 15 to 20 minutes over the starting schedule time," Zilic said.

"We're very disappointed. It was looking like a special night but anyway, we'll wait."

The under-21 game was declared a 0-0 draw while the senior game will be rescheduled for later in the season.

Meanwhile, mothers will have free entry to the club's Friday night game this week with the Warriors promoting Mother's Day and throwing in a jumping castle for kids. The under-21s will start at 6.30 with the seniors at 8.30pm.

Geelong Rangers 3 v Altona City 2
