Australia coach Pim Verbeek is poised to pick the tried and tested duo of Michael Beauchamp and Jade North when he announces his provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup on Tuesday morning.

TWG understands that despite limited playing time this season for 29-year-old Beauchamp, with UAE club Al-Jazira, and 28-year-old North, at Norwegian side Tromso, they are expected to be among the 30 players named by Verbeek in Sydney.

Skipper Lucas Neill, veteran centre-back Craig Moore, right-back Luke Wilkshire and left-back Scott Chipperfield appear certain starters against Germany in Durban next month, barring injuries, leaving a handful of squad berths open.

A-League star Simon Colosimo, Japan-based Mark Milligan and English lower league youngster Shane Lowry are tipped to be chosen by Verbeek in his extended group.

This would leave no room for Asian-based trio Eddy Bosnar, Sasa Ognenovski and Matthew Spiranovic.

Ray Gatt Article - The Australian

" FORGOTTEN defender Michael Beauchamp is expected to be brought in from the cold today when Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek names his preliminary squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa next month.

The former Central Coast Mariners stopper will be included in a provisional 27-man squad as Verbeek weighs up his options in the troublesome defensive position.

Beauchamp has been out of sight and out of mind since moving to the United Arab Emirates to play with Al-Jazira after injuries played a part in him making just 12 appearances for Danish club Aalborg in the 2008-09 season.

A tall, solidly built centre-back or right-back, he has been capped 19 times for the Socceroos and is now at least playing regularly with Al-Jazira.

It is understood he is regarded as a serious defensive option in light of Australia's problems at the back.

While Lucas Neill and Craig Moore are considered certainties to be in the first XI in South Africa, the Socceroos are short on cover because of injuries and lack of form."

Oh no, here I was thinking & praying that Pim is only taking Moore as a back up, in case Lucas Neill gets injured & he won't play unless Lucas gets injured.
But with Beauchamp's inclusion in the squad the terrifying thought just occurred to me that Pim is planning to play Moore WITH Lucas in the same team, at centre back, ( slow Lucas & slower Moore ).
Meaning Beauchamp is going as a back up centre back to either Moore or Lucas.

God help us, is that the best we can do?
