NOOSA coach Richard Hudson hopes his team’s first clash with McDonald’s Premier League competition newcomer Cooroora tomorrow night is the start of a long, intense local rivalry.

Cooroora United entered the league at the start of the year and has proved the surprise packet of the competition, sitting in third spot.

Noosa coach Richard Hudson said he was hardly surprised by Cooroora’s early success, given the calibre of its playing roster. He was prepared for a bruising maiden encounter between the two teams.

“It’s a great match,” he said. “Hopefully people from both clubs show interest and come and have a look. Hopefully we put on a good game.”

Noosa has been one of the big improvers of this year’s McDonald’s Premier League, sitting fourth currently after finishing seventh last season.

Hudson said while his team was not yet playing at its best, he had been impressed by the ability of his players to grind out close encounters.

“The old adage is that it’s a sign of a good team if you can grind out a good win even if you’re not playing that well,” he said.

“Everybody’s playing their part. There aren’t any star players in there or anything like that, but it’s a team effort. Everyone’s willing to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in.”

Noosa will be without the injured Luke May (hip) for the clash, as well as Pat Dennehy, who is serving a one-week suspension.

In Wednesday night’s catch-up match Woombye beat NYU 3-1 to move into second place on the ladder.
