The Argentina coach, whose country struggled to qualify for the finals, made the promise during an interview with FM Metro radio station.

"If we win the World Cup, I will run naked around the EL Obelisco in the centre of Buenos Aires," Maradona said live on air. The Argentine press is sure Maradona will keep his promise as he earlier posed naked for the El Grafico magazine.


Steve McClaren, the former England manager, has pinpointed striker Wayne Rooney as the "key" to his country's hopes of success at the World Cup.

McClaren, Sven-Goran Eriksson's right-hand man four years ago in Germany when Rooney's indiscipline undermined England's World Cup cause, said: "Do I think Rooney is the key man for England? I do. There are six or seven players who are world-class who can win the title of the best player at the World Cup and Rooney is certainly one of them."

Bike setback for Müller

Germany striker Thomas Müller crashed during a mountain bike run with squad members at their Italian pre-World Cup training camp, injuring his knee and requiring several stitches to a gashed chin. Müller, though, has not suffered any serious injuries.

Fifa fooled by fakes

Fake World Cup souvenirs are costing Fifa's official suppliers millions of dollars in lost sales according to an anti-counterfeit organisation. South African customs officials and police have found large stashes of fake goods at Johannesburg airport and elsewhere, including $2.5 million worth of national team shirts.

Tragedy hits ceremony

World Cup organisers have confirmed that singer Siphiwo Ntshebe, who had been scheduled to perform at the opening ceremony, has died after a short illness. Ntshebe had been personally selected by former President Nelson Mandela.

Brazil shuts banks

Brazil's passion for football means the country's banks can close when the national team are playing games in the World Cup in South Africa, the country's Central Bank announced on Wednesday. On those days, uninterrupted working hours will not be obligatory in the agencies of banks and savings institutions," it said in a statement.

Fifa drug crackdown

Fifa will be test eight players from each of the 32 teams during out-of-competition controls ahead of the World Cup. By the time the cup is held aloft on July 11, the total of tests should stand at 512.

Fifa medical chief Michel D'Hooghe revealed that on top of 256 pre-tournament checks, the same number of urine and blood tests will be conducted during the tournament itself.

Prandelli primed for Italy

Fiorentina will not stand in Cesare Prandelli's way if he decides to accept an offer to coach Italy. Prandelli is under contract with Fiorentina for a further year but has an offer from the Italian football federation to replace Marcello Lippi after the World Cup.
