A lack of help from the wingers was a major contribution for sure.

What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Ferguson - Expectation Did Not Help Rooney?
SIR Alex Ferguson claims the weight of expectation on Wayne Rooney was to blame for the striker's poor form at the World Cup.

Have your say.

What is it with him that makes everything someone elses fault. If Man U lose, its the refs fault, through to one of his players struggling, then its expectations. He is a highly paid pro player, deal with the heat or get out of the kitchen :)

Look at the way Rooney plays, it really is quite predictable and he only really stars in the EPL. We have seen just how well EPL players have fared at this WC. It shows to a point he is overhyped and people need a reality check about him. I have never been a fan of his I must say, but seeing him mope around the field at this WC was comic gold. He looks totally outclassed and unable to do anything. You can blame the wingers, coach or the press, but at the end of the day, the player makes his own destiny.

First off the pressure isn't just a temporary thing that starts and lifts for the World Cup, the English press and public have been hanging their hopes on Rooney's shoulders ever since he burst onto the scene as a teenager. Rooney is far from overhyped, people have been calling him overhyped throughout his career but he silenced most of them with his fantastic goal return last season but to me its the quiet off the ball things that makes Rooney deserve his reputation as one of the best footballers in the world.

It is the way he will track back and search for the ball rather than wait for it to land at his feet, it is the way he helps out in defence when necessary, it is the passion he shows for the shirt, it is the tireless work ethic he exhibits, it is the way he will gladly and effectively sacrifice his own game for the good of his team. Rooney's passion, work ethic and talent are unquestionable and make him one of the most talented and unique footballers in the world and that can not be questioned.

I see what you are saying but it is about delivering on the big stage. In his case it is the WC and in UCL matches. Overall, he really has not been anywhere near as good under the pressure of non-EPL matches. essi for instance did not deliver all he should have at this WC but he looked good, plus his UCL exploits are well known.

Rooney just seems to crack under the pressure and can not hide under the 'expectations' excuse throughout his career. Learn to block it out or face the reality that he will never deliver on the biggest stages.
