$123m wagered on World Cup 2010 12/07/2010 3:14:44 PM
Tabcorp Holdings Ltd says $123 million was wagered on the soccer World Cup with TAB Sportsbet.
Tabcorp said a total of 3.1 million individual bets were placed on the 64 games via TAB Sportsbet's national network of telephone betting, tab.com.au and its NSW and Victorian TAB retail outlets.
Online wagering accounted for almost one quarter of the total turnover.
"Australian punters have a love affair with the Soccer World Cup and the world's biggest sporting tournament has once again eclipsed TAB Sportsbet records," TAB Sportsbet Managing Director Craig Nugent said.
"Australian punters have voted with their feet to again make TAB Sportsbet their first choice when it comes betting on sporting blockbusters."
The biggest hold for an individual game was $9.5 million on the Spain versus Germany semi final.
Monday morning's Spain v Netherlands final held $8.4 million. The biggest individual bet was $550,000 placed at $1.52 for Spain or a draw in the semi final against Germany. The successful punter took away $836,000, including his $550,000 stake.

As a comparison, this is a report from NZ from their TAB. Not sure about other betting agencies there but here there is Betfair, Centrebet and so on, so this figure from the Oz TAB is indicative of total Australian betting.

World Cup a big winner for TAB By STACEY WOOD - The Dominion Post Last updated 05:00 12/07/2010
All Whites glory aside, the Fifa World Cup has been a winner for our national betting agency.
The TAB expects to take nearly $28 million in bets on the tournament, including a $100,000 punt on Spain to win the final game, which kicked off at 6.30am today.
TAB senior football bookmaker Gary Pearn said projections ahead of this morning's final were that the agency would fall "just short" of its aim of $28 million turnover from the competition. The $100,000 bet on Spain to win the final against the Netherlands had been the largest single wager.
Mr Pearn said the agency had pulled in twice as many new customers as expected during the tournament. "We've had something like 14,000 new accounts, when we were aiming for 7000."
The All Whites' games had been successful from a bookmaker's perspective because bettors had tended to avoid the draw option in favour of putting money on a win from either side. "The All Whites' games were very, very popular, and we did really well off those games because people were backing both teams."
Speculating on the result of this morning's final, he said Spain were the "worthy favourites", paying $2 to win yesterday.
One per cent of betting turnover and five per cent of the TAB's profits from the World Cup will go to Football New Zealand. (does FFA have a similar arrangement with betting agencies here?)
