Our football school may have funding to attend coaching courses for our coaches.
If anyone reading this has done a Coerver course, what value was it?
There were some good Coerver drills in 442 magazine. I've tried one on the training track, which was excellent.
In terms of the Coerver individual skills, I've seen few lately that I don't already know how to do, or at least do the steps sequentially to acquire a technique. Inadvertently we impart a lot on the training track at FFE from a combination of techniques I've acquired from Brazilian Soccer Schools, other soccer schools, other coaches, etc.
Thoughts?

Edited by Arthur: 28/2/2012 09:06:30 AM Looked up the link for your course. There was no info about the date (or I couldn't see it). When is it on, Arthur? I may attend.

I will probably do one in Canberra if it is available in the not too distant future. Otherwise I may see you in Melbourne in a couple of weekends' time.:) Check your PM. First day of the Coerver clinic today and was quite enjoyable. The ever pleasant and knowledgable Alfred Galustian was the presenter, he gave us a background on the Coerver Program then we took to the field he showed how to run Coerver skill sessions and make changes as we go to increase or decrease intensity and difficulty.
The Heart contingent of John Didiluca and Ante Milicic made an appearance, I wonder if they will be developing a junior program based on Coerver?

Day two the emphasis of the course was the "Session Planner 5 set DVD" series so Alfred was on more about how to organise sessions in terms of the break up of every session , warm up, 1v1, group play etc.
Alf showed us some drills which are all available on DVD, youtube, 442 Australia and Coerver websites.
Question and Answer period was interesting such as;
Most if not all kids are wasting their time going overseas especially with the growing emphasis of grow your own.
In Australia we don't have enough professional clubs to grow the standard of play.
We should look more towards Japan as a model for grassroots development and how they have devloped their professional leagues.
Be careful with going overseas on training camps at large clubs as they are usually the "commercial arms" of big clubs not the "Football Arm".
Again I emphasise that we would be better off as a football nation if we had more coaching like the coerver which centres around content which the FFA coaching dept. hasn't provided.

Totally agree Arthur But would like to add that until recently kids with skill have not been and are still not being selected into teams (most of all school teams now) and too many coaches still discourage skilful players to use their skills. Fear of losing seems to be the issue. Peter de roo was fantastic at seeing talent and encouraging it, not sure how we will go once he goes.

KNVB acknowledge that Wiel Coerver was a massive critic of their programme for not providing specific coaching content of teaching which skills when. They claim that there has been more of a convergence of thought in recent times. The NC's Building Blocks gives guidelines, as do the KNVB, but no specific skills. Problems have been when Coerver is taught in total isolation from team building, tactics, structure, SSGs. If it is combined with KNVB dvelopmental stages of training, or NC's Building Blocks, it is an excellent football programme. Interesting to hear Galustian's thoughts when not surrounded by FFA TD and other senior apparatchiks in the organisation.

It certainly was, he wasn't dismissive of our talent just that we should concentrate on developing our players for our leagues and becaught starry eyed on the $$$ of European football.

I have contacts within various state FFA branches and they tell me that the local boy , Jason Lanscar, is better than Alfred as a presenter of Coerver.
I think I'll head to the ACT ASAP to do a session with him.
