I think I know what you mean. If passed back from a teammate in a more advanced position, than have the player who needs this specific development, (sounds like a rep coach suggesting it), sprint flat out starting 10 metres from the edge of the penalty box sprinting towards it. Have another player lay the ball off from just to the side of the goal, fairly gently when he first starts in his direction, so he is facing the pass front on. Then he needs to strike the ball with the instep, with his head over the ball. If the instep is difficult at first , use the side of the foot. As he improves make the angle of the pass at more of an angle, say 45 degrees. Then even have the ball passed from side on. Do this on both sides of the goal, and in front of the goal, from the edge of the penalty box. If the ball keeps going over the bar it usually means a player is getting under the ball with their head up. Use markers about a metre inside each goal as specific targets for the player as they improve. If this suggestion has come from a rep coach (David Abela?) I'm amazed s/he hasn't suggested specific drills to improve this facet of the player's game.:-k Edited by Decentric: 17/4/2012 12:05:26 PM
