T-League Update and National Competitions Review
FFT supports the FFA's National Competitions Review - and a brief update on the T-League

Football Federation Tasmania has reached a milestone on the way to forming the state's newest statewide league, the T-League, in 2013.

FFT has received a healthy number of applications for the T-League, including applications from all regions of the state. These applications will now go to a sub-committee of the FFT Board who will assess the applications before making a recommendation to the FFT Board for T-League membership. The sub-committee will assess all applications and conduct the appropriate consultation throughout the process before reporting back to the Board.

It is not the intention of FFT or the T-League sub-committee to provide a running commentary on this process over the coming months.

This comes as Football Federation Tasmania has welcomed a visit from Football Federation Australia executives as a part of the National Competitions Review.

The National Competitions Review is a key part of FFA's strategic vision to make Australia a top ten football nation. The Review aims to bring greater consistency and standards to each respective State League or top level of football. The process aims to build capacity in each league and of each club competing in the top level competition.

John Boultbee, Head of National Teams and Football Development, Mark Falvo, Executive Manager and Emma Highwood, Club Development Manager, visited Tasmania to discuss the proposed T-League and its place amongst Australian competitions with the FFT Board.

The process is timely for Tasmania, as we look to implement the T-League in 2013.

In many ways, Tasmania is ahead of the curve as the standards we have set for aspiring T-League applicants are on par or ahead of potential national benchmarks to come from the National Competitions Review.

All clubs should be aspiring to work towards the criteria and be the best club they can possibly be. Key criteria from the National Competitions Review include;

· Elite pathways / teams
· Youth development
· Coach Education
· Governance / Organisational Structure
· Finance
· Facilities
· Member Protection
· Medical
· Reporting

The implementation of these benchmarks will take a staged approach with minimum standards needing to be achieved in 2013.

Over the next month, FFT will seek feedback from its Members through both the review of T-League applications and Club President meetings, to put in place standards for clubs in Tasmania to achieve national standards but consider local issues.

The only way the game will grow in Tasmania is offering the best opportunities to players. Does the current system offer that? IMHO No, as the small pool of players is split over 2 leagues, which limits the ability to truly test themselves.

If Tasmania has any chance of a HAL side in the future, this move is the only way it will truly be able to be taken seriously.

North to South about 3.5 hours.

North-West to South it is about 3.5 - 4 hours. i.e Burnie to Hobart

North to South is about 2 hours. i.e Launceston to Hobart

Many worry about the financial strength of clubs to sustain a team in the T League over time.

It would be good to see a T League and hopefully an improved standard of football, but at this stage it is only for men, not women.

Breaking the North / South divide is both revolutionary and necessary. By Australian standards a journey from Burnie to Hobart is not far (3hrs and 30 min by motorcar). I think the Hatfields will acrually benefit from playing the McCoys lol)

Not everyone is happy with the prospect of a state league in Tassie - northern clubs are particularly worried that it will hurt their competition, which for the most part is not nearly as strong as the southern league. Concerns about costs as well, across the board.

The T-League? Umm.. Should just be APL Tasmania, APL Victoria etc. It provides a clear brand structure across the country, and is better than the V-League, Q-League etc.

I love the positive news of this development, as it goes a long way to strengthening the game in Tasmania.

Bring on the APL Champions Series :)

Well as per the article, the best bids presented no matter who the existing club is. As it should be, selected on merit not ethnicity.

Could be viewed that way, but I would prefer to see it as Tasmania strengthening its own case for inclusion in coming years. The Tasmania HAL bid really has not got too far yet, and is working on a longer term plan for inclusion.
