They've been talking about the next "big one" on the San Andreas Fault since 1989.

Seattle may have 100 years to go on as they are, empirically speaking, according to WIKI.
Meaga-quake frequency looks like 400-500 years and the last one was 1700AD.

A major 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook an area in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the US state of Alaska early Saturday, the United States Geological Survey said. The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 0858 GMT, was located 102 kilometers (63 miles) west of Craig, Alaska, according to the USGS.

Scary part of expected mega-quake in West Coast of North America is that nobody knows its frequency, while geoscientists have already found evidences of mega-quake and tsunami in stratum. Scary part of Japanese mega-quake is that many expects it will hit south east coast in several decades...
It is not scientifically proven, but there are rumors that whales tend to be stranded before relatively large quake hits. Folklore of North American coastal native is really scary.
