Waste of time. If the philistines were capable of learning it wouldn't be the headache that it is in there.

"Could of" and "should of" are not abbreviations of "Could have" and "should have".

Thanks Joffa, this thread should be compulsory reading.

bias/biased

Though it doesn't even come close to annoying me as much as your/you're and would've/could've/should've.

thankyou...

Quote:
Your vs You're
What's the difference between your and you're? Your presence on this page means you're about to find out.

Your

Your is the second person possessive adjective, used to describe something as belonging to you. Your is nearly always followed by a noun.

What is your name?

Is this your pen?

Your book is on the table.

This is your chair and this is mine.

What happened to your dog?

Your being here is causing some problems.

You're

You're is the contraction of "you are" and is often followed by the present participle (verb form ending in -ing).

You're going to be late.

Is that what you're wearing?

I think you're lying.

If you're ready, we can go.

I can't believe you're a doctor!

When you're my age, you'll understand.

The Bottom Line

The confusion between your and you're occurs because the two words are pronounced pretty much the same.

The ironclad rule - no exceptions - is that if you're able to replace the word with "you are," you're saying you're. Otherwise, your only choice is your.

How to Use There, Their and They're

Use there when referring to a place, whether concrete ("over there by the building") or more abstract ("it must be difficult to live there").

Also use there with the verb BE (is, am, are, was, were) to indicate the existence of something, or to mention something for the first time.

Use their to indicate possession. It is a possessive adjective and indicates that a particular noun belongs to them.

Remember that they're is a contraction of the words they and are. It can never be used as a modifier, only as a subject (who or what does the action) and verb (the action itself).

Test your usage. When you use any of these three words, get in the habit of asking yourself these questions, but remember that they will not work in all cases though:

If you wrote there, will the sentence still make sense if you replace it with here? If so, you're using it correctly. If you chose their, will the sentence still make sense if you replace it with our? If so, you've chosen the correct word.If you used they're, will the sentence still make sense if you replace it with they are? If so, you're on the right track!

of versus off

The word ‘of’ has several functions in a sentence. One of which is its function as a preposition. The prepositional function is more often in use. The preposition, as a type of word, has several functions in a sentence. However, the main function of the preposition is usually to denote various relations that are described in the sentence.

On the contrary, ‘off’ is also a very common word. It has quite a few functions in the English language, but the most common of which are the functions of an adverb and a preposition. The more familiar of the two, is the adverbial function. It is also used to describe a state of discontinuance, or suspension: “Turn off the lights.’

1. ‘Of’ is mostly used as a preposition, and therefore, should be used when a preposition is needed. ‘Off’ is usually used as an adverb, and should be used in cases where an adverb is needed.
2. ‘Of’ is more often used in sentences, while ‘off’ is used less frequently.
3. ‘Off’ is used in conjunction with verbs, which is not the case with ‘of’.
