Victoria Police have charged St Kilda star Stephen Milne with four counts of rape following an alleged incident in 2004.

Milne, 33, of Cheltenham will appear in court on July 5.

Police allege a 19-year-old woman was raped in a bedroom at the home of Milne's team-mate Leigh Montagna after a club family day.

Both men have strenuously denied the allegations in the past.

At the time, the Director of Public Prosecutions decided not to lay charges saying there was insufficient evidence.

However in 2011, there were claims that a senior detective was pressured to drop the case against Milne, which led to a review of the case by the Office of Police Integrity (OPI).

That review recommended police review the brief of evidence to ensure that all relevant information had been properly recorded and retained.

As a result, further inquiries have been conducted by the sexual crimes squad of Victoria Police and after consulting with the Office of Public Prosecutions, the decision has been made to lay charges.
