Texting Driver Who Slammed Cyclist: I, Like, 'Just Don't Care'

The 21-year-old Australian woman was livid when she slammed into a bicyclist while texting late last year, putting dents in her car. The victim suffered a spinal fracture and would spend the next three months in a hospital, but Davis wasn't having any of it, The Standard reports.

"I just don’t care because I’ve already been through a lot of bullshit and my car is, like, pretty expensive and now I have to fix it," she told a responding officer two days after the Sept. 20 collision. "I’m kind of pissed off that the cyclist has hit the side of my car. I don’t agree that people texting and driving could hit a cyclist. I wasn’t on my phone when I hit the cyclist."

Davis, of Port Fairy, pleaded guilty on Monday to dangerous driving and was fined $4,500. Police say she used her phone behind the wheel 44 times before running down the cyclist. She called emergency responders but parked more than 300 feet away from the victim and refused to offer him help.

Davis couldn't contain her sadness after the loss of her license, and she made her woes known on Facebook:







The photo above appears to show that Davis expects to get her license back in May. She won't -- a judge on Monday suspended her license for another nine months.

The wife of the injured cyclist -- who got spinal surgery and was told he could have been a paraplegic -- said she was deeply disappointed that Davis' license wasn't suspended for longer.

I wonder what percentage of adult cyclists also have a car that they've paid rego for, not to mention their income taxes and GST. I'd say it'd be in the high 90's.

Even if it were legal, what part of the footpath was the cyclist supposed to be on, on this well paved, straight country road where the incident happened?

Even if it was the law for cyclists to be on the footpath if available, and even if the cyclist almost certainly wasn't also paying taxes and rego for the road to be there, the driver would have to be fucking retarded, drunk, or obviously distracted by their phone to hit someone on this bustling thouroughfare.

Having said this I find "cyclists" (as in the lycra wearing enthusiasts) worse than anyone and have them swearing at me more than any car driver. I'm just on my way to the station, Jeez.

Why are we blaming the cyclist? The woman was texting ffs. Then didn't even apologise, didn't offer help when he was injured, nearly put the guy in a wheelchair, then at the end of all of that says she "doesn't care" that he's injured cos her car is slightly damaged and she loses her licence.

What a fucken low-breed.

It's against the law in most states for a cyclist to be on the foot path.

What i'm saying is that if cyclists want to use the road, they should pay rego fees like everybody else or stay off the road.

1) A large portion of rego fees pay for repairs to the roads that cars damage much more that cyclists.
2) Everyone that has a bike, probably has a car, should they pay double because they use both forms of transportation?
3) Cycling should be encouraged as a healthy and green alternative to driving.

Fucking subsidies should be going to cyclists for not ruining the environment.

Doesn't see a day behind bars, only has her licence suspended for 18 months and a fine. Entirely incongruent with other acts of criminal negligence in other fields. Perhaps it has something to do with her gender and appearance, perhaps not.

Then you would have no argument at all, kids and adults alike will have exactly the same right of use, and I can tell you I would ride in the middle of the road at ALL times, not to be smart but if the cars are behind me they either overtake into oncoming traffic ( see how mucho they are when they are faced with a ton of metal coming at them) or simply live with it because I will live longer with the idiots behind me.

People in cars, no fucking idea. Get out there and dodge the idiots for a week, maybe you'll wake up to yourselves.

Using your own logic against you isn't twisting your words. Fact is financial investment doesn't determine adherence to common sense or the law (or at least it shouldn't, and doesn't in this case).
