Are we doing enough?
Its a major event yet walking around sydney Melbourne there is no signage, nothing on trains, just nithing. I mean you cant tell the event is even on!
I think its s big shame, and wasted opportunity.
Thought?

no we have not done enough. cricket world cup advertising a month out before their comp starts is already much better than the entire asian cup advertising run which barely existed.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anybody who didn't know it was on

Any kind of conventional advertising is very expensive. FFA have learned through the A-League that the cost-benefit just doesn't stack up for football here.
Other codes and sports benefit from a huge amount of "in kind" advertising, that they effectively don't have to pay for.

No where near enough advertising. The price of some of these games (5.50 for concession at ANZ) should have been flogged like crazy. especially during the school holidays kids would have flocked with their parents (always difficult to find things to do that don't cost too much money) could have had an extra 20-30% to some of the smaller games

Have to sell a shitload of $5-$15 tickets just to get back your advertising spend, let alone making a buck. Not to mention the opportunity cost.

Thought? There are 10 meter banners all over Southern Cross Station, been there for weeks. There's also a street banner outside my work. Edited by axelv: 18/1/2015 12:24:58 AM

bitza wrote:Living in south west sydney (rugby league area) I can assure you only football people know about this sporting event. But how do you advertise to people who live under a rock? In the last two weeks these regions have not: . Watched the news . Picked up a newspaper . Turned on the radio . Visited a sports related website . Visited a news related website . Engaged in casual conversation You're simply confusing ignorance with apathy which is a common flaw on this forum I don't doubt advertising would have led to hype and I don't doubt more hype would have led to more interest But don't give me this "nobody knows" bullshit. The people who don't know the Asian Cup are on aren't in any position to see the advertisements any way Edited by bluebird: 18/1/2015 07:48:05 AM

Crowds are quite reasonable, nevertheless.

My Carlton AFL supporting and very much anti wogball uncle said he was sorry he had something on because he wanted to go to the Palestine game, so there's that.
Really, in Melbourne especially, it felt like it was just a few games every couple of days in between other sports, like during the A-League season, it didn't really have that "tournament" feel where the whole city/country gets taken up in the fever of the competition like the Olympics, World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Euro, etc do.
I think the best way to combat this would be for one state to bid to host it on their own next time, as I said in another thread, which would mean games every day within a few hundred k's of each other, great for the teams and visiting fans (and the local fans, I say as I just now got back exhausted from Melbourne Airport from the South Korea game! ) and most importantly contributing to a critical mass, making the tournament feel like a "big deal".
Even with the number of teams going up to 24, surely NSW, Victoria or Queensland could manage this easily, and would make buckets of cash.

Weren't they expecting 45-50k visitors? Melb will always have the Aus Open, so can count Vic out from the get-go. NSW maybe. Forget Brisbane.
