I'm interested who filmed some of that footage. Like surely they knew what they were doing was illegal. I understand the CCTV footage but others looked captured with a camera...

Wait to see if the Royal Commission gets the balls to do a public session on the Sydney Boys Homes. This will be nothing in comparison.

has anyone watched a series called "outback kids"That was on the ABC a couple of years ago.
It was a very interesting series about a man who runs a facility in the Northern Territory for at risk kids. It was very much a rehab centre rather then detention.
Very good series.

that Dylan kid needs to be given a break, fuck me. Footage of them stripping him when he was only like 12 is fucked.
A kid his age shouldn't even be in a secure facility to start with.

This is over the top. I hope they reprimand and throw the book at those involved.
I'm all for severe punishment because fuck people but this is torture. What are they going to achieve? These little shits will come out more resentful than when they went in. How does that help anyone?

I have a problem with protecting people with a system that they wilfully disrespected. I have no problem with corporal punishment. You reap what you sow. I do have a problem with the torture of children.

Yes they are in prison but to toture kids isnt going to make them rehabilitated .

Just watched it. Not exactly something that you want to watch over your morning coffee and toast. I agree to a certain extent that there are some kids who do deserve a bit of tough love. But what happened at this Don Dale facility is nothing short of torture. You start doing that to adult prisoners who have committed similar crimes as these kids, and you wouldn't get away with it. Kids like these unfortunately are never given a chance in life and turn to a life of crime. Inevitably, they never get the help they need from a psychological or emotional level, and as a result they fall back into routines of recidivism. Those kids who were placed into solitary and abused like that, they'll never be the same. They'll definitely not be rehabilitated. Unfortunately, with systematic abuse like that the rot starts from the top, and there's no doubt that they Minister for Corrections in the NT was aware of this, and has clearly done nothing. The only way this will be fixed is if it does go Federal. And even then, it's going to take a lot of work.

I'm a pretty cynical person, but this has shocked me - its one thing to over-react to a situation and belt a kid (not that it is justified). But that photo of the kid strapped the chair with the bag over his head is just completely appalling.
As mentioned elsewhere, this is something you expect in Guantanamo Bay. And it makes me fear what else is going to come out about what has gone on there.
If torture is systemic and rife, you'd have to say there is a fair possibility for s-xual abuse to have occurred as well.
Completely appalling.

Very but some people who work in prisons do have a conscience and are parents themselves. Yes prison can be brutal but that is distirbing

surely this isn't the only youth centre in Australia being run like this. there probably needs to be a full review of all facilities in the country.
I'm surprised there wasn't any allegations of sexual abuse, surely there would be centers where that is an issue.
