Regardless of Arnies decisions today or in the past I would like a fresh change. I want to enjoy the football we play. If we can’t play attractive football then why Ange made it happen and even won the Asian cup doing it. When you play good football you can comeback into a game. When South Korea equalised today it was the end of the game, when they did in 2015 the game was still on. This style is such a depressing way to play football

Under Arnold the new exciting generation is akin to an appreciate at the German apprentice at a government agency. They come in all talented but the system soon drags them down and they become one of the old, outdated system. I'm really not sure if Arnold is going to get the best out of Bos, Robertson, Iredale and the rest.

I think his job is safe but I don't expect marked tactical improvement to benefit our best players.

Our players are in 2nd teirs of europe yet arnie got our best result at a wc, qualified with barely any home games, qualified us for the olympics for the first time in ages, beat pims defensive record for most minutes without conceding and was some bad finishimg away from getting past a star studded sk side

We can get a superstar european coach and it will make no difference. He did just as well as ange did in the a league and look at where ange is

The question we need to ask is, how do we get players back in the big 5?

We are reaping the fruit of decisions made 20 years ago since that is the amount of time for a young person to go through a development system. We went from a league giving 150 aussie players game time a weak to a 22 week season giving game time to just 42 players and no connection to youth development

We invested in coach education and a ntc and it seems promising with the olyroos looking a step up in technical quality and a league coaches having impressive achievements, from popas acl run, to angez euro sojourn, to muscats japanese adventures to arnie being the coach of the 2022 wc.

But we still have a lot of a league clubs without academies (even adelaide united!) No youth competition, a really short season with only 11 oz teams, no second division and no p and r. Japan has 3 leagues with around 60 pro clubs, saudi arabia has 32. We are punching way above our weight as shown by my analysis of our elo compared to the number of players in the big 5. Hope is on the horizon. The moment we finally have the league independent from the a league the nst is announced. Watch p and r follow. But just as we are paying for decisions from 20, the decisions we make today will take years before they matter.

look i was against his reappointment initially but he has won me over

he failed the last asian cup but this one i'd say was a reasonable success - no shame going out in extra time to South Korea

[not forgetting] he had a great world cup and deserves to stay on [if he wants]

i agree the football boring to watch but that isn't all his fault - he doesnt have the players - the Socceroos have NO stars or notable names so you can't expect them dazzle

compare us to S.Korea which have BIG names in their squad - and players playing at the top levels of the game - on paper countries like Denmark, S.Korea, Argentina etc should be beating us 4-nil - we have been competitive and we probably could of beat S.Korea if had a little bit more quality ultimately it was a world class player in Son and his top free kick that separated the two sides

THE BIG BENEFIT OF OUR NATIONAL TEAM NOT BEING SHIT HOUSE IN COMPETITIONS IS EVIDENT - look how many players in the AL are getting given decent contracts in big leagues now - it starting to feel like we have started to go back to the NSL days when we actually had players heading to top leagues and clubs getting decent transfers for developing [which is what the AL should be focused on]

IMHO the only way we build a decent stream of transfer fee funds for the AL is if the national team keeps on the news feeds of the big euro nations and the only way to do that is to get results which for the most part GA has

5 times Australia has participated in the Asian Cup.

Three times Arnold has been the coach and each time he’s been knocked out at the quarter final. On the two other occasions we’ve made the final both times for one win and one loss in extra time.

Both our potential and our problem is clear.

Arnie ball = stop attacking and try to hold a 1-0 lead for 45+ minutes by defending in the box. He does it every time and we lose. He did it to Mariners in their Grand Final by taking Ibini off when he was ripping us apart non-stop and we had 3 defenders back to cover just him, and he does it to the Socceroos.

I had no problem with how we played the first half. I have a problem with how Arnie always plays his second halves if we are unfortunate enough to go to half time a goal ahead.

I really hate Arnie ball and his 'stop attacking now we have a lead and give them a chance to come back' mentality.

This far out from a World Cup a good OS manager will cost too much. The only Aust manager that I would rate similar to Arnie is Ange - I can't see that happening again both from Ange's pov (why would he) and from FA pov (leaving after qualifying).

Talay, Muscat, Popovic et al are all a level below Ange and Arnie.

Arnie's job is as safe as houses but wouldn't mind Tony Popovic as next choice, afterall he did manage to get an ACL title.

I don’t know where to go of a realistic replacement.
Ill give Arnie kudos of the Qatar result we have to but I also call it lucky but its on the record.
I don’t consider any mentioned worthy of this position whatsoever mind you.
Talay come on what more has he done.
Poppa’s timing and the quality he had with wanderers was peach but again what’s he going to bring above Arnie.
Muscat just gtfo full stop !
Ange been burnt he won’t forgive how it went here and I don’t blame he has far better fish to fry.

We’re in a void of options considering local coach’s - they lack international experience - Arnie has had spades hence his resume.
We’re in a bother for a Aussie coach knows how it all works for us but we got no one that can step up better than Arnie as much as I dislike his game.
Oir going up and coming cattle - we just got to hope they show far better skill and handle pressure on ball far better than we got at present for it’s not just Arnie.

Though I would prefer an Australian born coach the candidates mentioned ( Popa,The Muskrat,Talay and Ange) for various reasons are not suitable, available or interested.I liked the French coach who previously coached Saudi Arabia if Arnie is to be moved on.Lots of emotion here about the loss and fair enough it was gutting to be so close.I know Miller made the mistakes leading to both goals but I hate to see a young player hung, drawn and quartered as he has been here and on other platforms.Putting him on is on Arnie if someone like Deng was available but overall Arnie's game plan was near perfect even though it can be difficult to watch.

Herve Renard. Interesting shout. Good manager from the little I've seen. I'd imagine he was on a very good wicket with Saudi but has mostly managed countries of modest means.

Yeah, I didn't like it when he brought Burgess on. Not only tactically but I thought it sent the wrong signal both to our players and also SK. Would have preferred a midfielder to come on, if we still had one available (I thought the squad selected was a player light in midfield). I also thought it was strange to bring on Fornaroli rather than Yengi. I remember Guus saying he brought on Archie in WC match using attack as a form of defence i.e. Archie's pace on the counter would give opposition something to be wary of. Fornaroli's strength is working in tight spaces around goal. Yengi has the height, pace and power to at least have given SK something to worry about and give more thought to protecting their own goal.

I did watch that final and was not overjoyed with his latest A-league appointment, however he has proven himself at a big tourney and reinvented himself somewhat tactically recently.
I would say the Aussie national team is also better than the Wanderers btw.

Press conference. Squad with an average of 19 caps so it is seemingly new.

The subs were right in that Goodwin said he was exhausted. Atkinson had an ankle knock but also his elbow got smashed. It was just implemented incredibly poorly. I'm especially disappointed in how McGree was used and played this tournament.

I am not sure that Bohemia's comment was not dripping with sarcasm.

During WC I was one of the few who actually put their hands up and said they're wrong. The rest just fell silent, collected the result then apparently waited all this time for the Asian Cup to see if they could have a second chance shot at bagging him. Well congrats to them, they saw us fail in a tournament and they're saving face in front of some anonymous accounts on the net, pinnacle of life right there.

Arnie gave us the mst spirited and successful performance in a world cup we ever had with the worst WC squad we ever had. I was wrong. He's our guy. He has earned another go around and Qatar WC was when he earned it.

It'd be incredibly awkward to break it up now anyway. It's mid cycle. It's very true that Arnold has and can deliver. You can see he definitely needs rest and the absolute best environment to work with. I don't know what it was but he seemed very weighed down and insecure this tournament. Well, against the minnows at least. In his element last night his plan kept ticking the boxes and the team were responding. All in all if Arnold has calmness and clarity then decent things happen. I think the break after Peru to fully get a WC plan together saw him at his best and happiest and that's how anyone would function well.

I feel there was a similar, unclear goal, system and mood like the 2022 qualifiers late stage. It appears once things get a bit vague or pressurised, Arnold is paralysed. ET last night was something of an exemption but also a collapse. Until then it was working very well. The team played some very good parts but the lack of trying to retain possesion was the poorest part, seemingly part of the instruction.

The idea of a newer squad doesn't entirely sit with me but he had to really introduce some of the newer players this tournament to get those questions answered and he didn't so we're still left wondering.

That’s why I said there is NO local alternative.
I gave him kudos on Qatar it was a surprising and best ever result but we do need more and that imo is the cattle.
Arnie needs players who can play the game we desire.
Ball players in the middle first and foremost and well, a regular scorer or 2.
The forever Achilles heal for us, a forward who delivers on the score sheet.
He can only play what he has and I give him credit playing defensively for we got no Son types or attacking midfielders at starting choices ready BUT he needs to give some of the young ones a GO who have the promise turning into something we need.
