How many times has that been said?

Maybe I should have said ‘ the beginning of the end ‘.
I can’t see Mike Charlesworth funding the franchise for very long given the fact that Peil took over the funding because Charlesworth was about to hand back the licence to the APL and he tried to make a go of it.
As Peil said the straw that broke the camel’s back was the $2 million reduction in funding from the APL.

From almost 2.5m to just a touch over 500k 

Add in the crazy levels of inflation 

The league is in a bad way 

Pretty dire stuff tbh.....

MC was never handing back the license before Dick. He even reassured the membership on multiple occasions
He wasn't going to, and stated he would work to find a buyer.

Mere platitudes

How did he manage to lose $7 million in just over 2 years ?

Did that include selling half the squad twice ?

Wow thats pretty dire, especially considering their success on the pitch... 

I hope if they do hand back their license they at least keep their NPL club alive and continue to participate at state league level at least for their fans and members to have a hope of keeping their support going. I feel for the Mariners fans, not exactly in the same situation as us, but similar, stay strong and follow your club no matter what league its in. 

But the only offer he got was Peil's 'try before you buy'

Now, there's no buyers at all

Peil was looking for Investment partners but got none
Now he's looking at another loss making season for the chance to buy the license.
If Charlesworth is likely going to hand it back, Peil could put an offer for $1 today, but he's not keen to do that.

APL gave Perth away for $1 to get the cash drain off the books
Seems likely the NJ consortium pretty much gave away the license cos they didn't want to carry on funding the loss for a license that had plumetted in value
And Canberra can't get it up after 7 years of fluffing
MV can't move unless A-Cap decide to do something

Can't quite see how the APL survives this,
the whole League can't hardly be worth what Silverlake have already put in, so they'll have to take their Dividend in more Shares

And that’s why I’m saying that I don’t see the Mariners surviving in the A leagues for very long.
As a Mariners fan from the start in 2004 I hope I’m wrong but I don’t hold out much hope.

I don’t know if it’s a seperate license for competing in the NPL but hopefully they can keep the club going.

The good news is if they go we have two NZ clubs. Including one funded by an actual billionaire! How cool is that! Apparently he has a holiday home in NZ

How pathetic are the APL that it has come to this.   Fancy losing 140 million dollars & letting the clubs fend for themselves. Incompetent nincompoops.  

Remember how the APL idiots were shreiking for years that they weren't getting any TV money & that the FFA were holding the game back?  

And yet the NSL ran from 1977 to 2004 on the smell of an oily rag.  

Funny how corporates project an image of administrative know how & competence when in reality they're just a bunch of fucking idiots.

I know many very well off successful independant business owners who to this day go out in the field and hear/see what their customer needs are - thats how you know what your commidity needs, make changes and keep growing.
Its actually not rocket science, its getting off your arse from the office/boardroom.

All jokes aside the Mariners (and a couple of other Aleague clubs) in the NST isnt the worst call in history.... Operating at a more cost effective model would make them powerhouses in a power league and drive revenue through a better match day experience..... Id love to see them play at Lakeside :)

Unless clubs can get backing from multi millionaires or private equity investors (a la the MLS) then I can’t see many surviving, certainly not the Mariners.
I haven’t ever been to Lakeside so that would be a good away game to make a trip to.👍

The bottom line is, that clubs need to be more self sufficient. Totally relying on TV money is a gateway to hell.
Not all leagues around the world are self reliant on TV money.

yep in this country relying on broadcast funding is a lottery whilst the game can't build up its own steam and have filled stands week in week out.
Only the afl nrl can carry on as such.
Agree not every country has the viewership to rely on media funding as well but at least they have a league that keeps going and most have P/R whereas we ? never ending slippery slope and barriers.

Its why I believe the franchise model just doesnt suit this country...  We built the "palaces" before figuring out what we wanted them to look like
All a club like Mariners really needs is a council owned ground thats well maintained and cost effective to rent, somewhere to train and community buy in from stakeholders that care about the club (and by extension the sport) above everything else. Being "forced" to spend waaay beyond their means every year to match some sort of "professional" standard as dictated by a diverse bunch of investors in an as diverse range of markets is insanity... In the Aleague CCM is a minnow club but in an NST it would be a giant and its presence would drive growth for all other clubs in the leagues below..... 

I think only the ‘big four’ from Melbourne and Sydney are suited to a franchise model. If the A league changes to a Nations super league it might have a chance to survive so smaller clubs like Mariners, Jets, Roar etc would be far better off in a Championship type league.

Mariners, Jets and maybe Perth would be well suited but I feel that other "clubs" need the safety bubble of collectivist franchise model to sustain themselves. 

The Aleague doesnt need to "change" to a super league, it already IS one :)

By ‘nations super league’ I meant a league involving Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, India and New Zealand where clubs have millionaires backing them.

That would be the only real "expansion" that makes financial sense for the model.  Would mean a lot less live football for the existing Aleague fans though, I doubt they would be too happy... 

I think they could be ‘converted’ to  Championship fans.👍

Don't know about that mate... 20 years of rusted on support is hard to break a love affair with a club... Sure , many dropped off the old NSL clubs for the new shiny franchises but lots didn't.
