Mayora moves in leaps and bounds 01.03.10 12:59 Sydney Olympic's ace attacker Matthew Mayora in action against the Sutherland Sharks in round 1 of the NSW Premier League Sydney Olympic striker Matthew Mayora has returned to the NSW Premier League after three whirlwind trips to Perth, Indonesia and Uruguay to further his career. Last year’s NSW Premier League top goal scorer joined the Perth Glory for the first six rounds at the end of the 2009 season, and was happy with his progress at the A-League club. ``I loved it in Perth,’’ Mayora said. ``Dave Mitchell is a great bloke and he gave me a few chances in the first team. I am grateful for that. Following his stint in Perth, Mayora joined Indonesian side Persipura but didn’t have the best of times. ``I got to play in Indonesia in a Cup game which was a great experience,’’ he said. ``But the things that happened were not nice. ``Over there we had coaches speaking behind our backs saying one thing but doing the other so I didn’t like it and I decided to leave.’’ On his return to Australia, Mayora pledged his allegiance to Sydney Olympic but quickly darted to Uruguay in January for trials prior to the start of the NSW Premier League season. ``I went over to Uruguay and trialled and actually got an offer to sign for a club,’’ Mayora said. ``Unfortunately over there you need a manager with you to join a team and I didn’t want to do that. ``But when I left the club that wanted to sign me, they told me their doors were open for me after the World Cup so I left on good terms I guess.’’ The striker will now play out the season with Sydney Olympic and aims to return to the country of his heritage in the future. ``I’d love to play over in Uruguay,’’ he said. ``Playing over there, knowing the language and culture makes things a lot easier. ``The players are much different over there, their skill level is quite high, they are very sharp. ``It is another world over there. Over there it is a full time job and that is what I am now aiming to do.’’ -By Christopher Georges http://www.nswpl.com.au/index.php?id=554&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=3388&tx_ttnews[backPid]=537&cHash=922eaaca1e

If he knuckles down and puts in a good season he should have another shot at the A-League next season.

I actually agree that he's a good player and is A-League quality. Had he not had offers from Indonesia i think Perth might have offered him a contract, I could definatly see him at a club like North Queensland or Central Coast. It'd be interesting if he does go to Uruguay. He's got a decent wikipedia page too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Mayora

Well, the only reason i don't activly support a team in the state leagues, cause i'm not effnik enough. Hence why i bandwagon for Manly. Wouldn't wanna support Olympic and United anyway. not my crowd.

He's A-League quality, eh, solympic? By your reasoning, that means he's shit.

Can't say that I ever did really support anyone in the NSL. Too young growing up, and when theres no publicity except hearing that Sydney United fans had started a riot when playing Olympic, can't say when your 12-13 it has a great influence. Iv'e played football since i was knee high to a grasshopper, but iv'e never really supported Australian football till the A-League came along. I had more intrest in the English Premier League and European leagues till then, but when you grow up in a British family, i guess thats why,.

LOL TBPH there's nothing wrong with being a new dawner. Like he said he followed the EPL and European leagues more because he came from a British Family. That's no different to me and you following United coming from a Croatian Background.

LOL So, what you are saying is, he should apologise for being born to late to witness the "good days" of the NSL?

LOL So, what you are saying is, he should apologise for being born to late to witness the "good days" of the NSL? so he was just a euro poster boy?? no need for an apology, just dont give me that crap he couldnt support an nsl team, when quite clearly there were Anglo teams to support...

I was born and raised in australia but was far more connected to the Italian side of my family and raised very "woggy". At school (10 years ago) i was called a traitor by "the wogs" for hanging out with the "anglos" even though hardly any of the "wogs" could speak Italian as well as i could etc. In reality i got along with all of them but one group called me wog and one group called me traitor(all in good fun btw). I followed Adelaide City(juventus) in the NSL(as opposed to west adelaide hellas for obvious reasons) as a kid and cried when we lost a penalty shoot out when i was about 10. I then stopped watching football for a whole host of reasons mainly coz i was running around doing other stuff in my spare time though i've always played. then adelaide United came along and you know what? i didn't even think about whether I should not go for them because they werent tied to a specific nationality(though some people claim there are too many italians running it aka krijoz). i didn't feel like a traitor and to be honest i didnt even go to many AU games in the first two years coz like i said i was busy a lot of the time on weekends getting drunk and playing in bands. Also now i am a paying adult and have spare time and money I've been a member for 3 years and am loving it. I know I have gone off topic but i was initially just curious as to who I should go for if I'm meant to support a club based PURELY on my background. I guess I'd have to go for TWO NSL teams coz I have TWO ethnic heritages.

Exactly, that is the damn point. But it was just too hard for people, who were Australian to support a Greek, Italian, Croatian or Serbian club, because the clubs first priority was getting the respective nationality on board of the team. Whereas the "anglos", where placed as the "second-fiddle" supporters. PAOKTZI (I think), said it a while back. "The Club welcomes everyone, but it wants the Greek community more". Or something along those lines. I am sure there would have been a lot more support, if clubs stretched out into the community, therefore having Australians supporting whatever club it was situated in their, regardless of nationality. Fans should never have been to restricted to "anglo" teams outside their home district. Edited by Proud2becanberran: 12/3/2010 04:01:43 PM

Grew up more Croatian so inevitably went to Sydney United games like my Dad did when he was a kid. That's when I was 8 and well I've developed that connection with the club not just because of the Ethnic ties but because of going to games week in week out for 10+ years.

I just rejected some of the sentiments above(solympic)where he pointed out there were anglo teams for the anglos to follow and greek for the greeks etc. It's just such a childish view of the world. I knew plenty of non-italians too who went to watch Adelaide City in the NSL days.

I wish i understood your typing more solympic. I can never tell what you realy mean. I'd never say anything bad about greeks OR community football clubs. never have, never will. In fact I love sitting down to a bit of mezze with some ouzo. I just dont agree with some of the shit you say about other leagues and other football fans and especially when you say silly things like anglos have their clubs and we have ours.
A pinch of salt it is
