End of an era?
Striker unlikely to spend another season on Bernabéu bench

Last updated: 28th April 2010

He will be 33 in June and if he got an offer from a top-six side in England - which is somewhere he has always wanted to play - he'll take it.

Guillem Balague says a summer move to England is a strong possibility for Real Madrid captain Raul.

The 32-year-old striker, who holds the record number of appearances for Los Blancos, is set to miss the remainder of the season after limping off with a sprained ankle after scoring in the 2-1 win at Real Zaragoza.

And although he has one year remaining on his contract, Guillem told Revista that he is unlikely to settle for another season on the bench.

"Nobody knows for sure but if it was his last game, he did manage to score with his last touch," said Guillem. "He's picked up an ankle injury and will be out for four weeks at least.

"That tells you everything you need to know about Raul. He is a leader. He was injured just before his goal, but he saw the space and went for it. He has a year left on his contract and Real Madrid have made it clear they want him to stay. It's his decision."
Undecided

Raul has won 12 major honours during his time at Real, winning six La Ligas and three Champions League titles, and in the process became the club's record goalscorer with 323 goals.

"He has been saying publicly that he will stay for another year but I think he wants to play; he doesn't want to sit on the bench," said Guillem.

"He will be 33 in June and if he got an offer from a top-six side in England - which is somewhere he has always wanted to play - he'll take it. That offer hasn't arrived though and there's still the possibility of going to the United States. I don't think he has decided his future yet."

A-League couldn't afford him, and I mean not even on Marquee wage and indeed I kind of agree with Bari, at 33 he still has alot to offer Europe, probably too much for the MLS, let alone A-League. Maybe at 34-35 he might be decent for MLS and 35-36 here lol, if he's somehow free from constant injury - ala Juninho experience.

When thinking of 'Spanish Marquees,' one guy that stands out as an excellent A-League Marquee in my mind, is former Liverpool star, Luis Garcia. His contract with Racing Santander expires end of this coming season 2010/11 and he'll still be relatively young, turning 33 by then.

He would only put the bums on seats, he would tear up this league and entertain to boot, so maybe even putting, MORE, more bums on seats! He's certainly a more realistic/obtainable A-League marquee too, in a way - More than a 33 year old Raul!
