I'm a little surprised to see King there. No more so than that Jamie Carragher is there. Come on Carra! Be the hero and show them how wrong they've been in overlooking you in the past!!

And Heskey :-$ That's just an embarrassment.

Workhorses one and all. If I had a kid in the UK with the potential to make it big, I'd tell him to go play in Spain or South America and learn a bit of flair. Comes the time, England will need a bit of flair and it wont be there. It never is.

I don't think flair is really necessary when Capello is your coach.

i'd absolutely call up someone like Shawcross or Cahill or even Smalling or Jones over Carra, to be honest - where's the upside to it?

Carragher has experience and that's a bit lacking outside of Terry and Ferdinand down back. Carragher's been picked more for his ability to cover for Johnson at right back should the need arise in preference to Wes Brown. He's not really there as a CB as much as a fullback.

Top 10 unluckiest absentees from Fabio Capello's provisional England World Cup squad

The unfortunate men who miss out on a potential trip to South Africa...
11 May 2010 16:06:00

By Neil Jones

So the waiting is over, for most people anyway. Fabio Capello's provisional England World Cup squad of 30 was named today and, like his 'Player Ratings' website promises to, it makes for pretty interesting reading.

There is a recall for Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, three years after the 32-year-old announced his retirement from international football. Joe Cole is also named, whilst Michael Dawson, Darren Bent, Adam Johnson and Tom Huddlestone are included.

But what of those who didn't make it? Goal.com UK charts the unlucky few who missed Capello's cut...

10. Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United)

England caps: 42 Goals: 0

Season in five words: Thirty seconds and one touch

Disappointment Factor: 1 out of 10 - Cannot argue after so long out through injury.

9. Paul Robinson (Blackburn Rovers)

England caps: 41

Season in five words: Best season for some time

Disappointment Factor: 3 out of 10 - Outside shot, but had his day at the 2006 tournament.

8. Carlton Cole (West Ham United)

England caps: 7 Goals: 0

Season in five words: Decent in a struggling side

Disappointment Factor: 4 out of 10 - Enhanced reputation, but far from international class.

7. Phil Jagielka (Everton)

England caps: 3 Goals: 0

Season in five words: Superb after return from injury

Disappointment Factor: 4 out of 10 - Was always a big ask to recover from serious knee injury in time.

6. Gary Neville (Manchester United)

England caps: 85 Goals: 0

Season in five words: Return to form for veteran

Disappointment Factor: 5 out of 10 - Perhaps expected, but Neville remains a top class full-back.

5. Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa)

England caps: 3 Goals: 0

Season in five words: Tailed off after bright start

Disappointment Factor: 6 out of 10 - Raw pace is rare, but was comprehensively outscored by Bent and Defoe.

4. Stewart Downing (Aston Villa)

England caps: 23 Goals: 0

Season in five words: Impressive after injury-hit start

Disappointment Factor: 7 out of 10 - A rare left-footed option, but displaced by rookie Adam Johnson.

3. Wes Brown (Manchester United)

England caps: 23 Goals: 1

Season in five words: Hampered by injuries and inconsistency

Disappointment Factor: 7 out of 10 - Not enjoyed a vintage campaign, but his versatility is always an asset.

2. Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

England caps: 7 Goals: 0

Season in five words: Pace, skill and end product.

Disappointment Factor: 8 out of 10 - Enjoyed a stellar season for Villa, though outshone by team-mate James Milner.

1. Bobby Zamora

England caps: 0 Goals: 0

Season in five words: "When the ball hits the...."

Disappointment Factor: 9 out of 10 - the 29-year-old has outscored Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch this season.

Suprising as this has been Carras worst season in a while.

That said, he has experience, can cover multiple positions, and would be good for the dressing room

It's mostly that there's no real option on the right other than Johnson. Bit of a snub for Richards but Carra's experience will be invaluable and he'll be determined to win after the season Liverpool have had.

im actually happy that carragher was called up

started off very poorly for liverpool this season and overall it hasnt been great for him but hes done alright in recent months. plus hes experienced, generally reliable and very versatile. id much rather see him in the squad than average/not ready players like shawcross and cahill who also only play one position as well

im happy that dawson made the 30 man provisional but unlike the majority of spurs fans...im a realist and i dont think he should be in the final squad at all. he has no experience and aside from a good back end of the season with spurs... he has had plenty of clangers with us in the past....

king is by far englands 3rd best central defender and yes at max can only play twice a week....with that said hes obviously capello's trump card and will only use him if ferdinand or JT get injured/suspended. i hope capello does not take upson who has been dreadful this season for west ham and consistently nervous and below par for england.

im a supporter of joe cole. hes still englands most technically gifted player and is always the one who will offer something different. he hasnt had a great season but he has played well in stretches and never fails to perform for us.

this would be my final squad

Beckham in talks over England coach role

Beckham in talks over England coach role Chat recap: All Whites midfielder Tim Brown NZ U-20 women's footballers lose to USA FIFA to honour former All Whites skipper Wellington Phoenix welcome Aussie striker John Terry's dad admits drug offence Winning All Whites shirt up for auction Sky Sport steps up, will broadcast FA Cup final All Whites' standby list full of talent All Whites chase World Cup respect

David Beckham has talked with England manager Fabio Capello about the possibility of a coaching role at the World Cup in South Africa, the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder said on Friday.

"I've spoken to the manager and spoken to (assistant) Franco Baldini and they made it aware to me that they felt I have a role to play with the players and with the team," the former England captain told reporters.

"Whether it be a coaching role... I haven't sat down with the manager or talked about specifics, he just said he feels I can help the team and help the players, whatever role that will be."

Beckham will not play in the June 11-July 11 finals after injuring his Achilles tendon while on loan at Serie A side AC Milan in March.

"He (Capello) says I can help the players and help the team and I'm honoured by that, he feels I will be important, I have to see how my therapy goes but I'm hoping to travel with the team," Beckham said.

England have been drawn in Group C for the finals in South Africa alongside Algeria, Slovenia and America.

Expect England to surprise

JOSH RAKIC
May 16, 2010

THE England soccer team is in its best position since 1966 to take out the competition, according to Fulham and Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

For so long Australia's team of choice to support at World Cup level before the 2006 final when the Socceroos qualified for the first time in 30 years, England looms as a serious threat under new coach and renowned disciplinarian Fabio Capello.

Capello has managed arguably two of the world's greatest sides in Real Madrid and Juventus, leading both to

great success, and under his guidance Schwarzer said the England side could finally live up to expectations - the team hasn't made it past the semi-finals since winning in 1966.

"They have some unbelievable world-class players in their squad, and a world-class manager - I think that's probably the biggest key this time around for England," Schwarzer said. "They have got a manager who is very disciplined, a very strong character and someone the players know what to expect from. They know where they stand, or some don't know where they stand with him which is probably a good thing for them because I think over the years they've been lacking too much in discipline and team cohesion that has probably cost them in previous tournaments.

"This time around they will be in the best shape, more so mentally than anything else. I think they're a real shot to be successful at this World Cup. They're going to be strong, they're a strong team."

Ranked 10th in the world by FIFA, England also has its best draw in recent memory, being grouped with the US (15th), Slovenia (23rd) and Algeria (31st). Australia is ranked 20th.

but joe cole is not a winger mate thats the problem. he spends the entire game cutting in when he plays on either flank as hes a natural central player

only reason why hes spent so long playing for england on the left side of the attack is because we have had no other person to play there thats good enough. joe cole is wasted in that position just like we wasted scholes and heskey there in the past before him, whilst players ala dyer, sinclair, downing, mcmanaman, barnes etc were just rubbish or didnt perform well enough for england

johnson is like the first decent(ok, we havent seen what hes like for england yet, but the signs have only been good so far) natural left sided player we'ved had in nearly 20 years

he's not a traditional in and out winger who gets the crosses in from the byline admittedly, but there aren't too many traditional wingers going around anymore (Valencia and Johnson come to mind in the Prem but not too many others)... but he's been a left winger/midfielder for aslong as i've known, and have never seen him play through the centre of the park before, for England, Chelsea or West Ham so i'm not sure where your getting that analysis from... also you look at it and the bloke they got playing on the left side of midfield at the moment isn't a winger let alone a left midfielder anyway

wait did you just say that Mcmanaman was rubbish or didn't perform for England

ehh what? joe cole isnt a wide player :? he made his name at west ham as a number 10 and has even said himself that its his preferred position about a billion times. he was only playing out on the left for england for the same reason scholes was which was because we had no one else to play there

never seen joe cole play in the centre before??? are you sure mate? unless im going blind im pretty sure he was playing at the tip of the diamond for chelsea when he got back from injury before the formation was changed again and played mostly as a central attacking player under ranieri at chelsea before he was sacked. mourinho started using him as a wide player in his 4-3-3

gerrard is just another player to be wasted out there and will just be added to the long line of central players wasted out on the wing

mcmanaman rarely played for england and when he did it generally was not very well
