I think they played really well, and if they didn't make wholesale changes for the 2nd half and in particular Bertos & Brown going off, then they deserved to win the game. What do you think about the FourFourTwo article 'Kiwis Have Earned Their WC Spot'? NEW Zealand coach Ricki Herbert believes their performance against Australia shows the Kiwis can compete at the World Cup - and justifies regular future clashes against the Socceroos.Have your say.

Sorry New Zealand, to convince the world that you've "earned" your place at the world cup you're going to have to put together a more convincing qualification circuit where you beat Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Bahrain to get there.

It's good enough for FIFA. You dropkick.

It's good enough for FIFA. You dropkick. Are you being deliberately facetious, or did you not really follow the qualification process that Australia had to go through?

It's hardly NZ's fault that they had an easy qualification path. They were given that path and qualified therefore deserve to be there.

notorganic, you think that most NZ football supporters wouldn't rather have a tough qualification period like Asia does? It's not our fault. We beat what what was in front of us.
You struggled to beat Bahrain and now you struggled to beat us. You can't gloat at this point.

notorganic, as a Socceroos fan I resent your insinuation that Australia didn't "earn" their World Cup spot in 2006.

Apart from an ageing squad, not that much should have been different from how Australia used to play 5 years ago. The only difference is that there is a different coach with a different vision, and clearly the team is not able to gel around that vision. No disrespect for having qualified against Asian teams; but the wins were mostly unconvincing and in that we should gloat too much about New Zealand performance. They do not have as many classy players, but they have a good coach who knows what to do with the limited resources at his disposal. Unlike Pim.

"The history of New Zealand (football) tells you - you play one up front and you get 10 behind the ball and hope for a set play (to score)"
That sounds disturbingly like the history of Australian football under Pim Verbeek.

Everyone at the world cup earned their place, except for France.

Havin a laugh Herbert. I wasn't surprised at New Zealand's performance. I was surprised at the Socceroos performance. It was rubbish. That doesn't mean you were good. I thought New Zealand was terrible.

Why the fuck can't a few other Australian fans show some humility? We're as embarassing as Grella not apologising for a complete dog act.

notorganic wrote:I dunno, I didn't read his quotes. Well here ther are for you: Ricki Herbert wrote:"The history of New Zealand (football) tells you - you play one up front and you get 10 behind the ball and hope for a set play (to score) so hopefully we have changed that sort of thinking with the personnel we have," he said in reference to Smeltz, Killon and Fallon.
"I think we caused them (Australia) all sorts of problems with Rory's ability in the air while Chris is a good finisher and with Smeltz we have seen what he can do in and around the box.
"Maybe we surprised (people in Australia) with our performance but it was a good positive statement of what we are about and where we are at and although we have got a lot of work to do yet leading into the World Cup I was very pleased."
"It was a great match and I can only thank the FFA (Football Federation of Australia)," Herbert said.
"It was great for us to have (a World Cup warm-up) game here (in Melbourne) in front of a big crowd and with the big rivalry back again and hopefully that continues.
"Given the right timing and with all players fully fit I think it would be an amazing opportunity for the game (regular Australia-New Zealand fixtures) and hopefully people went away having enjoyed the game."

NZ weren't great, but they showed good spirit and Ricky Herbert has done well with his squad IMO.
I'm not totally against some kind of annual clash. It wont be the 1st choice squad(s), that's for sure, but if anything it might help the sport popularity a little and give some of the younger players more experience in bigger matches.
