Quote:Federation Square drops plans to allow fans to watch World Cup games Evonne Barry From: Herald Sun May 27, 2010 12:00AM MELBOURNE soccer fans are without a World Cup meeting place after Federation Square cancelled plans to run its "live site" for fear of overcrowding. More than 10,000 people packed the Square, and spilled into Birrarung Marr, during each of the Socceroos' clashes in 2006. But this time around, Federation Square management, which markets the site as "Melbourne's meeting place", has shut fans out. Australia's matches in South Africa - the first against three-time winner Germany at 4.30am Melbourne time on June 14 - will not be on the Square's big screen. "This time around, interest has grown so much in the soccer that we could not accommodate the expected numbers of people safely at Federation Square," venue spokesman Ron Smith said. "We had more people than we could accommodate in the square (four years ago)." The Football Federation of Australia and City of Melbourne are now looking for an alternative "live site" venue. Police said they had been involved in the consultation but the decision rested with the city and soccer officials. Warren Livingstone, founder of fan group The Fanatics, said: "It's disappointing - hopefully they will find an alternative." http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/federation-square-drops-plans-to-allow-fans-to-watch-world-cup-games/story-e6frf7jo-1225871785779Edit: Herald Sun have now updated the story in the link. I'll post the update below Hopefully something is organised and this isn't another kick in the guts for the sport. Gotta wonder... if this decision is based on what happened in 2006, why are they organising their options at such a late stage? Edited by road warrior: 27/5/2010 10:00:23 AM

Considering they have had four years to plan for it and knowing how popular it was in 2006 you have to say that it's pretty piss poor on the part of Victorian government. Hopefully all you Victorians can get together and put some pressure on Melbourne City Council.

AAMI Park? Sidney Myer Music Bowl? Royal Botanic Gardens? Fitzroy Gardens?
Plenty of places to choose. IF they really want, they could place a huge screen in the middle of the river, and people can watch from both sides of the stream.

proves what a white elephant fed square is. it was meant for events like the WC. why not just fill fed square first, close it off, then shunt any spillover to Birrarung Marr?
like the music bowl idea, but the local fun police (ie. residents) wont let it happen.
nanny state indeed:(

Quote:Birrarung Marr to screen Socceroos World Cup games after Federation Square drops plans Lucie van den Berg, Evonne Barry From: Herald Sun May 27, 2010 12:00AM UPDATE 8.25am: MELBOURNE soccer fans will be able to watch World Cup matches at Birrarung Marr after traditional screenings at Federation Square were cancelled due to public safety concerns. Organisers scrambled to find a new live site after frustrated fans expressed their outrage at the decision this morning. Minister for Sport and Recreation James Merlino said fans can converge on the nearby outdoor site to watch the Socceroos take on the world next month. "We had more people than we could accommodate in the square (four years ago)." Mr Merlino said the the adjacent Birrarung Marr site would be more than double the capacity of Federation Square holding up to 15,000 people. “We made the call that if we want a live site we want it much bigger than Federation Square can provide,” Mr Melino told SEN radio this morning. He said that there were fears that it could turn ugly if soccer fans were unable to fit into Federation Square, especially for the second match, which is held at midnight on a Saturday night. “If I had a child 16 or 17 years of age I would be much happier knowing they are going to Birrarung Marr rather than a very crowded and potentially dangerous Federation Square.” Police said they had been involved in the consultation but the decision rested with the city and soccer officials. Warren Livingstone, founder of fan group The Fanatics, said yesterday: "It's disappointing - hopefully they will find an alternative." http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/federation-square-drops-plans-to-allow-fans-to-watch-world-cup-games/story-e6frf7jo-1225871785779

Good to hear, but surely plans should have been in place months ago. It all seems very last minute indeed.
I'm not that familar with Melbourne, is there no way they can have both sites operating? Limit capacity at Federation square and overflow to Birrarung Marr? or over 18's only at federation Sqaure?

This is old news. This was known about two days ago and if any numptys that walked down to the MCG would have realised that they were organising something at Birrarung Marr. Big fuss made about nothing.

Why would you want to be on Melbourne to watch the World Cup. Sydney FIFA Fan Fest or Fed square? What will be better?

The police as usual doing what they do best and trying to fuck up everyones fun. Can't find anything else but will be interested to see what they do with this one.

Watching football with 15,000 Melburnians that actually want to be there > watching football with a handful of Sydney wankers turning up for a special (red: gimmicky) occasion.

Why is it that melburnians have such an inferiority complex Vis`a vis´ Syndey? Mention the word Sydney and their faces turn red, relax kids we know your a big city too.
I'm sure there will only be a handful of people turn up and it won't be anywhere the figures they are predicting, because after all it's just some 'gimmicky' event. I'm sure there won't be any 'real' football fans at any of the other 'gimmicky' live sites in Rio, Mexico City, Paris, Berlin or Rome either because heaven knowns they would want that sort of gimmicky occasion ruining their world cup.
At the end of the day i'm sure that both Melbourne and Sydney will host quite big crowds to watch the games.. it's just that those of us in Sydney will just have to put up with all the wankers and somehow deal with all the 'gimmicks'

Guy's its still gonna be a great live site. Yes. I'd rather Fed Square, but i work for a company (not naming names) that will be involved in the setup of this live site. And today saw a map of the set up. 4 Big Screens, one in each corner. Bars, Food, Undercover areas. It's really gonna be fitted out. It's gonna be one hell of a live site

Hope they have a few screens up at the one in Sydney so the other games can be on as well. So if Fed square can't hold 15,000 how many can fit in this other place?? Will there be any problems with capcity?

This new live site is meant to hold up to 30,000 people. And yes the Sydney live site will have multiple screens, but am unsure about the multiple games at one time, that is to do with SBS Broadcasting Rights and the rights of an official FIFA Live Site
