He may think he can play in multiple positions. But he's not competent in any of them. He was directly responsible for NZ's goal, and would not have a clue how to play right back. Bring on Beauchamp What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Millsy Is Pim's Flexible Friend? WORLD Cup Socceroo Mark Milligan knows his flexibility as a defender can be a double-edged sword.Have your say.

I agree! I'd pick Beauchamp over Milligan or Moore any day

Milligan is a very good player. Did anyone not see that it was infact Neil at fault for the first goal against NZ. Neil dropped off his player (the guy that did the flick-on), and that caused Moore to have to try and cover him (which on TV made it look as though he was in no mans land - he was just trying to cover Neil's mistake). Milligan is better suited in a central position though.

Both were . Moore was caught in no-mans land and milligan didn't cover the back post run. it was smeltz that was unmarked. and you may be right ,not sure

I'm a fan of a fit Moore, but he ducked! That's the synchronising that Milligan talks about. Who would place bets on Moore ducking a cross? Milligan played well and he played well in the Asian cup. We need new players to stand up in this tournament and I hope he's one of them. Has the potential...

we cannot afford to have players at the world cup taking half a game to adjust to a position. every position must have a specialist not filling in for someone else or we will get punished by the worlds best

I think it LOOKED like Milligan was at fault, but he wasn`t the main offender. Milligan had stepped up, so the NZ player was offside, but Neil was playing him onside, and Moore did duck, but he probably couldn`t have got there anyway. Ultimately, in a team game, they're all at fault, but Milligan was probably less at fault than it looked.

Moore did not duck. He was going to header the ball but Smeltz changed the trajectory. Milligan was right on his player but just a step behind. The real issue is stopping those type of crosses from coming in. Not enough pressure was applied to the crosser.

Yeah, I tend to agree with Wilier that the real issue was the cross, although I do think Milligan was slow to pick up Killen's movement.
In general, I thought Milligan had a poor game. With Wilkshire, Williams and Emerton in the side I can't see him playing at right back in South Africa.

Pretty much the sum of it. He was just plonked out there to see if he'd suck less than North in a pinch and won't play any role at the actual world cup.

Milligan can play DM and CM. In the NZ game he was shown that he cannot play wide. Still a good player though in his positions.
Out wide we have better options IMO. Rys Williams should be the cover for LUke W at RB. Rys for me should almost make the team at RB with LW being moved into the midfield role.
Moore and Beachamp wil play out that CM role. I would say that position is the most open at the moment.

having gone over this goal a few times on youtube...
1) the NZ player who flicks the ball on is Neill's man. 2) Neill drops off and Craig Moore tries to get there in vain. 3) Moore got his head in a position to head the ball if the NZ player missed the flick-on, which is why it appears he ducked. 4) Milligan, Moore and Neill are all in line until moments before the cross is played in. As Neill drops off his man, he plays Milligan's runner onside.
All of these points have been put forward by different people already, but it seems that if anyone is to blame for that goal, it's Lucas Neill.

and I should add... while the cross should have (arguably) never come in, the job of defenders is to deal with it when it does!

no need to worry guys. milligan is the third choice RB beind wilkshire and williams (maybe even 4th with emerton) so i dont think we will be seeing him at RB for a very long time. hes a good CB though

Scotty Mac must be thinking how does a piece of shite like Milligan go to a world cup and I dont. Milligan believes the media hype about himself much like Colosimo and North. How the hell Ruka is going, he traps the ball further than I can kick it

Why is he using the fact he played at RB as an excuse for his poor performance? If he considers himself a defensive utility man then he should be familiar with the position. Plus he's played there for a period in his career before, so he should at least know a little of what he should be doing. If not the coach would have at least spoken to him of how he wants him to play before the start of the match.

Lets see how he goes in a 90min run against a decent side. Not a hurting NZ side. Also not sure what game you watched but i think milligan was the least at fault for that goal.
