Rio ruled out of World Cup

Sky Sports News understands Rio Ferdinand's World Cup is over, with a knee injury leaving his dreams in tatters.

The England skipper picked up a knock during the latter stages of training on Friday and was immediately rushed away for medical tests as the Three Lions attempted to uncover the severity of the problem.

Initial fears suggested the Manchester United centre-half may have suffered ligament damage and those concerns were heightened as he left a hospital close to England's Rustenburg training base on crutches and with his knee in a brace.

The outlook appeared bleak at that point and Fabio Capello's worst fears have now been realised.

The Italian was quick to play down the problem during his press conference on Friday, but that was while he awaited news on a scan.

Since then it has been revealed that Ferdinand will play no part in this summer's South African showpiece, representing a crushing blow to the Three Lions' plans.

Leader

The experienced defender was set to be a leader on and off the field, but will now be forced to relinquish those responsibilities.

The armband will be passed to Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, who had been the squad's vice-captain.

Ferdinand's place in the squad will go to Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson, who was placed on standby the moment news of the injury broke.

The Spurs ace thought his World Cup ambitions were over after he was cut by Capello from the 30-man preliminary party on Tuesday.

However, he is now set to fly out to South Africa on Friday night, where he will reacquaint himself with his international team-mates.

So Dawson comes into the squad in Rio's place. Gerrard gets the captains armband and King will most likely start now. A massive massive test for England with a some concerns over whether King can last the distance.

Nup. Captaincy goes to Gerrard as he was the vice-captain.

Depending on who they verse in the second round I'd be tempted to say they go out then. Us or Serbia will push them all the way and with the uncertainties over whether King can last that long into the tournament things will get interesting.

What a day for World Cup injuries. First Drogba fractures his elbow and now Rio.

What would piss England off even more is that Rio's injury came in training. At least the other big name injuries came during games so they are understandable. But to suffer a knee injury bad enough to put you out for the World Cup in training is just unacceptable imo especially a week out.

shame that is a big loss but I like the fact Gerrard will be captain! so who becomes vice captain then?

what was Rio doing in training to get such an injury? oh well, seems the other teams are trying to make it easier for the socceroos to make it pass the 2nd round (thats if england ever meet up with the socceroos)

well gerrard will get the captaincy like he deserves now.

im not too shattered that rio is out though. he is a big loss fo england, but hes only played 21 games all season and has been in and out with injury. dawson has had a good season for spurs, even captaining the side and i think he can do the job.

however, damn you heskey for injuring rio.

Nup. Drogba just fractured his elbow. Ballack is out because of a tackle in the FA Cup Final and Essien has been out since before January.
