Fury's Interim CEO Archie Fraser described the announcement as the club's most significant to date.
Id rate the signing of Fowler as more significant.
Straka's signing is still very significant and if he's successful and stays on for multiple seasons, then he WILL have more significant impact than Fowler did. On the club's style of football, club culture and even crowds wise, if they enjoy some level of success and are an attractive proposition to watch, while they're at it.
And just getting to their squad - Sure, lol, they could well end up being the fittest bunch of donkeys in the A-League, but...
The new coach has a number of advantages coming in - A talented 'young' squad to work with. Plenty of roster spots free, including VISA and a Marquee spot free, free wage space, to sign up talent of his choosing, but, not TOO MANY free especially considering he may not have that much time to scout, trial, sign and then prepare those newer players for the coming A-League season. Aswell as that as the key element of local/league knowledge, which Middleby, Mclaren and the present squad signings, especially the re-signees, lend. That experience helps Staka's settling in no end, especially prospects of success first half of the season especially.
Sign up 3 more experienced, quality VISA guys for key positions like CB and suddenly Fury could be even more competitive than last season. And don't forget, Fury may've had some decent squad signings last season, Fowler aside, Stefanutto, Henderson and co, but Stefanutto was out most of the season and Henderson failed to secure the #1 jersey, where on paper, he really should've and was expected to. Those guys would've taken bigger wages too, so it's not like the Fury have lost much in those areas, if anything at all - Given quality replacements like their new LB Simon Storey, a guy any A-League club would love to have.
BTW The Fury's final squad could well end up being the youngest in the A-League - the 15 players signed thus far = an average age of just under 25! When one thinks of the impact Lavicka had, Straka really could achieve alot of lifting the level of these young boys, a few of them are former Australian Youth Internationals and one who was even the NYL's Player of the Season, this season past (Panni Nikas)!
