We're the underdogs and that suits us fine!!!! :) What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Kewell: We've Nothing To Lose? HARRY Kewell has hailed Australia's medical staff as he looks to the opening game against the Germans and insists: "We've got nothing to lose."Have your say.

what a throw away comment!, wehave everything to lose HK, remember we are as much a part of the world cup as germany are.
Play the underdog tag all you want but don't act as if it means nothing.
C'mon Socceroos!

"It's only 11 men v 11 men at the end of the day"
Great quote. there is no reason why we cam't beat them. in the end of the day it is 11 men vs 11 men. They have 2 arms, 2 legs. both teams are made up of high level professionals who have been training daily for much of their lives. there is nothing stopping us from winning.

C'mon Socceroos! To understand the significance of Kewell's comments, compare with these comments from Michael Ballack: Quote:"Germany is a nation which must always win," he said. "You really have to suffer to get to the point where the real suffering begins. You are only respected when you win. This is brutal for sportspeople, particularly for youngsters. That will be the case for our lads in South Africa. It's awful for the team when they can only really enjoy the tournament from the semi-finals. Anything else would mean failure. That does push you and motivate you, but it is a merciless game. To start with, the aim is purely to avoid a catastrophe." http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup/group-d-australia-germany-ghana-serbia-1993981.htmlGermany have much more to lose in that opening game than we do.

I like Ballacks comment better. He at least is understanding the importance the country puts in to this competition. I'm sick to death of people saying its good enough to be there and we have nothig to lose. We have everything to lose. If we fail to progress through the group stage or even win a game, the potential A-League crowds drop instantly.
Without success Australian Band Wagoners will not turn up to see if the A-League can match their fantasies of world domination.
We need results so that the Game in Australia can continue to grow.

Rocknerd, the Australian public does not make such demands of the Socceroos.
I don't know of any sport where Australians put pressure on their sportspeople to win, and yet we do.
I would hope that it never comes to that because I've seen it in England and it can be very ugly. I think for most countries of our stature it is a great achievement to get past the group stage.

disagree Ecce,
we may not come out and say things like "win or we'll hate you", but you can see from crowds in any sport, Australians love a winner, and won't go to watch unless they are winning.

I don't think the average Aussie has massive expectations, to be honest. People realise this is the world cup and we were very lucky to do so well last time. If we can make it through the group, great. But if not I think people will be happy as long as our boys go out there and give it everything.
The only thing that could seriously set the game back here would be 6-0 thrashings or totally embarrassing performances, and I don't think that's gonna happen... And anyway, there are plenty of other great teams for people to watch.
In other words, ENOUGH ALREADY WITH ALL THE NEGATIVE GLOOM AND DOOM!!!
IT'S THE WORLD CUP, YOU IDIOTS!!!
ENJOY!!!

Can everyone feel the ancticipation? the world cup is here, the only event that will literally stop the world for a month. I know we in Australia don't appreciate the impact this tournament has on the world psyche, and Kewell perhaps understands this more than any of us, hence his comments. The Germans have a lot more to lose than us, in reputation, in credibility and in their own minds as finalists and winners of this tournament, the expectations on this team would be a lot greater than in our Aussie team, which by the way, is on the upward in terms of recognigtion and respect on the world of football. Whatever you think of the team, get behind them, and support them 100%, I know I am. It is already written in the history books people, Australia will meet England in the last 16. See you there.

Mate i don't know if you watched the last 2 Olympics but i was disgusted at the disappointment the media threw at our athletes that didn't achieve anything but gold. Athletes that train every day in their chosen sport to dream of competing against the very best the world has at their sports biggest stage and our media turns their back on them as soon as gold is not forthcoming. I don't watch Olympics or commonwealth games anymore simply because its not about the athletes or the great stories anymore that makes one feel good about being an Aussie but more to do with corporations like CH7 and the Daily Terror spewing out puff pieces on the same sports personalities time and time again aimed at the bogan viewers. At least their is enough football supporters on here thats remember the bad times and can just enjoy the adventure that we'll get in South Africa.

Belchardo, what are you disagreeing with? I said that Australians don't put pressure on their sportspeople and you seem to agree with me by saying that the Aussie's tend to not watch when our sportspeople aren't winning. I don't really see this as applying pressure. Pressure is more like outright verbal assault, looting the streets, anger etc. when the team loses. Australians are, or at least used to be, very reserved when it comes to offerring criticism. I would be disappointed to see the Australian public develop a mentality where the team's best wasn't good enough because we celebrate all that is good about sport. Winning is only one of those good things.

Hey Lucas, Timmy, Schwarzy, Harry, Jase, Wilks, gather round for a minute, ive got something to tell you!. You are the players that everyone will be looking to for inspiration during the WC, if you can manage to beat these Germans in the first game of the group stage it will send shock waves around the football world and set us up for a good tilt at the round of 16. If it happens that you lose we know that you have given 200% cause thats the Aussie way and we will still be proud of you all. Thats the message i would be giving the boys, let not forget we are playing Germany yes Germany remember them? Three times world champions numerous final and semi final appearances in fact one of the strongest footballing nations in the world. And Australia is and always will be the underdog until we can win a world cup or make the finals and the top nations in the world consistently. It will happen just stay positive and lets go for a ride with boys so they know we are behind them.

Wrong and insipid response again Gaz!!
You might think that way (once again your postmodernist relativism comes to the fore) I don't share this perspective and I can assure you there are many like me who expect Australia to win all there games so to suggest that people will be happy as long as our boys go out there and give it everything is simply insipid nonsense and a misunderstanding of historically derived contexts!! History Gaz that thing you relativists can't come to terms with!!

Interest in the sport in Australia will skyrocket and the A-League will reap the rewards. It will inspire thousands of Australian kids to take up the sport and take it more seriously as a career and we will have a much, much better team than we do now in the future. The socceroos will overtake our cricket team as Australia's most popular national team (I know a few people think this is true already, but I still don't think so). The traditional powers of football will start treating Australia more seriously. It will also inspire other non-footballing nations to emulate Australia's achievements. There is so much that could happen with a result against Germany. There is heaps riding on this game and I definitely think Australia has something to lose if we don't achieve a result.

Same thing was said when Australia beat Uruguay helped for a little while but things didn't sky rocket.

This sounds familiar, like when we had a group comsisting of Brazil, Croatia and Japan. No one gave us a shot. Wonder how that worked out for us?

And even if we lose to Germany and crash out, and even if we don't make the next World Cup, or the one after, football will still become Australia's #1 game within 10 years. So just enjoy the game. ;)

Good luck to the Socceroos,of course their progress will boost the image of the game back home...but lets not believe in the crap that the AFL and NRL media have been drumming up for the past 40 years, that the prosperity of football depends on the progress we make at a WC...what a load of rubbish..just making the WC proves we are amongst the eite of World football....even without the World Cup...the A-League can go forward in leaps and bounds as long as we have our own media outlet ie an independent newspaper, radio statio, TV station that can support the A-League in the way NRL and AFL depend for their existence on media money
