I wonder if this guy teaches this philosophy to his own children.

Kids, if its hard, don't do it!

Yeah, like any self indignant white person, I like 'the idea of soccer' more than I actually like 'soccer'. All of this talk of brotherhood and connectivity and internationalistisism is what its all about.
Until you stay up till the early hours to be disgraced. And then soccer once again becomes the sport of a peculiar breed of hooligan poofters.

With a little investigation you can find that the Author of this peice of fiction is also the writter of the very famous Australian Novel "He died With a falafel in his hand".

If half the crap in that book is true then you can understand that the drugs he has taken have clearly warpped his perception and brian.

Why do you think Howard Stern has been so successful?

Think about it - how many times did Gaz piss people off with his blogs last season. Just about EVERYONE that read his pieces reacted strongly.

His blog remains one of the most clicked blogs on 442. Extra clicks = extra ad revenue = happy media men.

Actually that journo - John Birmingham - writes some very good stuff, particularly when he's sticking it to the USA and Big Business. But he's clearly just having a bit of fun here. Take it with a big grain of salt and it's kinda funny.

Extremely weird that we're such a "backwater country" when we've qualified for the best 32 teams in the world twice in a row.

Comments like this sort of make me wonder about Australia... not just sport fans, Australia in general

The highs of a World Cup, showcasing our team to the world.
The lows of a crushing defeat, nothing to hide.

Football has this. The other codes cannot get to that level.

You know what AFL is a sport all about making money and Rugby is a sport for meat heads. AFL used to be a sport about passion and pride its lost its why, now its all about home much money they can milk from fans.

Football is small in Australia i agree and it might die after the WC because of Australias poor show especailly if we lose all three matches. but there is something special about football and anyone can play almost anywhere and great pride lives within it.

Personally i dont care much for the opinion of country bogen journos who marry there cuzn and f*k der relatives. If they would perfer to play a sport Australia only competites in because we are to shit to take the world on in a really sport let them. Criket is the most boring sport in the world 'imo' yet country douch bags like this slanders journo loves it because Australia is good at it. Problem is we are only good because no one cares about it, same with rugby, same with AFL.

Football is something everyone wants to be good at just because we are not at the moment doesnt mean we cannot try to be one day. Players like Ronaldo, Beckham Zinden etc are know in the furthers reaches of the world. If you when to Europe and asked them who is Chris Juud they would have no idea. If you when to Japan and ask them who CR9 they would tell you a portuges winger who plays for RM.

A great rugby player, a great league player, an AFL champion, they might move from club to club, but there is no need for them to ever set foot outside the country to earn a living. Fans can head down to the local park on the weekend knowing that they have a good chance of seeing some of the best talent in the world. For a great soccer player, however, Australia is the arse end of the world. They have no choice. They have to leave if they are to play the game as well as it can be played.

that because no other country gives a rats arse about your silly sport. ever wondered why these players are not overseas, because the sports havnt got international interest.

brazils team is full of european based players, yet the sport is the biggest there. ridiculous excuse for an arguement from the journo here.

its obvious journos in Aus are uneducated.

Great that we're at the forefront. Free publicity for our game.

It is a little annoying that people don't realise that we have 2 matches still to play.

So Germany beat us. SFW. We've always beaten them where it counted. At Alamein, on the Western front, and I reckon we'd totally beat their Teutonic arsenböttoms at Eurovision song writing if we were allowed in. But they were always going to beat us in soccer, the same way that Algeria or the Virgin Islands or the Seychelles or whoever we play next is also going to pound us to pink jelly.

As a humane society, I think it's wrong that we allow this cruelty to go on. Soccer will never be anything more than a minority pursuit in Australia, and we will never be anything more than a lame joke internationally. It doesn't matter how many times the game is restructured. It doesn't matter how much sponsorship is poured in. It doesn't matter how much Australian soccer fans really, really, really want the national team to do well. It's never going to happen.

Remember the great Simpsons joke about the football match to decide the most powerful sporting nation in the world, Uruguay or Paraguay, or Portugal or whatever? It's funny because it's true. Sort of. It's never going to happen for England. It will only occasionally happen for Germany. So what the hell makes us think it would ever happen for us? The best thing for everyone, I think, is if we have a word with the Ruddbot and get him to tweak his net censorship legislation, so that the interwebz are no longer illegal, but kicking a round ball about a muddy field while being watched by half a dozen sad faced obsessives is no longer allowed.

Soccer will never go anywhere in Australia because the base is not there and never will be. Why not? Because soccer's weakness in this country is self reinforcing.

And for as long as the cream of our talent is drawn to Europe, the local game will remain nothing but an oddity and a joke. I guess if you need an excuse to stay up all night every four years, it's not a bad thing. But that's why we have the Olympics. Or even the Winter Olympics. Where we have more chance of winning something than we will be in South Africa over the next two weeks.
