Quote: Asians may be glad Australia lost * By Yasir Abbasher, Senior Reporter * Published: 00:00 June 19, 2010 * Gulf News Abu Dhabi: The Asian football family has different feelings towards the heavy defeat of Australia by Germany — the biggest so far in the World Cup. The Australians were convinced to join the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2005 by Mohammad Bin Hammam, the AFC boss, who believed the new member would help improve the standards of the game in the region. The decision was largely opposed by those fearing Australia would dominate the Asian World Cup qualifying, leaving only three berths for the rest of the teams. I was astonished when one friend, a former international football player, called me to express his happiness after the Australians were trounced by the Germans. "Yes I am happy because first they are not true Asians and they have robbed the original Asian teams of a seat in the finals of the World Cup for which the continent has fought for ages. "The Asian teams have not benefited from the decision to add Australia to the AFC but New Zealand benefited and now they are in the World Cup, while good Asian teams like China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and others are not playing there. "On the continental scene, Australia have become like a fat, tall bully among children, but on the international scene they are a helpless team. We should organise a campaign to discuss this issue and demand the AFC change that decision," my friend added. http://gulfnews.com/sport/football/asians-may-be-glad-australia-lost-1.643036

You can always count on Asians for some bizarre racist rants.

This sort of attitude does not say much for our chances of hosting the world cup.

this isn't new. I think it was a Kuwaiti FA official who said the same thing.
They have a point: The socceroos acted like they owned the world at the Asia Cup in 2007, the Asian Confed took the bait of an additional spot at the WC, but ended up losing a spot (and no, saying its their fault that they aren't good enough to beat us or NZ doesn't matter, beacsue WC is about competing, not about having the best 32 nations playing off).
As long as bin Hammam is president, Australia is safe in Asia. Beyond that Australia, needs to become a better neighbour with Asian confederation nations.

Middle east is just sore losers... they have no teams in there, inferior complex maybe ;). no wonder they are bitter at least in that part of the world... indonesia etc doesnt seem to have a problem
The reason we joined was for stronger competition and I dont see that were not a benefit to the AFC. I dont see us being cocky, maybe a little over confident when we played in the asian cup but I dont see us being arrogant in asia. The rankings tell us that were the best in asia... enough said

Can you name an asian team from the middle east in the world cup? Also we did no favours for NZ. they did it on their own ffs, all bahrain had to do was knock them out. I don't care if we have new zealanders in our a-league - blame fifa for the schedule, last time oceania had to play a south american team. there are nz in other leagues too.

FWIW, this WC has shown if we were in the group with Nth and Sth Korea (and Iran), I'd say we would have struggled to get a top two place. Don't forget Iraq- at least- matched us, and they were replaced by Qatar due to some admin problem(,and more than 50% of our goals were against Qatar). We still think we're the best in Asia, by far. Don't think we are as good as we think. Quote:

The deal with the Asia confed was that we give Asia our half place in Oceania, and the fifth best Asian team plays off for the other half place from Oceania. Meant that NZ didn't have to play a Sth American nation. I'd say thats a favour for NZ.

Yeah Stefcep, I realised that after i posted the comment about the extra half spot etc, thanks correcting me. still if australia is on par with those nations then nz shouldn't have been and thus bahrain or someone else should have disposed of them easily. saudi arabia, china iraq etc weren't in that position so whatever, it was their own undoing. Easy to point fingers at australia, esp when someone is at the very top.

Wow. One Asian (assuming it's the Chinese commentator?) is happy that we lost. This must surely mean there are 2 billion voices behind him.

The Asians are still shirty as Australia is seen to have trained up many of the NZ players via the Phoenix being allowed in the A-League. And yes, Australia's 2005 win against Uruguay made it easier for Oceania the next time around...

Heineken wrote:And you wonder why people like Pauline Hanson exist...we need some counter balance... One idiot does not speak on behalf of all of Asia. Pauline Hanson's ideals exist largely from fear, if it's not Asians, it's Arabs, if we were monoethnic it would probably be aliens copping it. We have enough red necks counter balancing ignorant comments such as Andrew Johns. The intelligent person generally can see past stupid comments like this and use a little perspective.

This is not new as there is a vocal middle eastern faction that never wanted us in the AFC and that still want us out. We won't really ever be safe because this middle eastern faction hates our guts, and are on the record as doing so. We need to establish very firm ties with South East Asian and North Asian football confederations as a counter-balance, which is why we should be very happy about the recent good signs with our relations with the Indonesians, highlighted by their support for our WC bid. The Indonesian support is underpinned by close administrative and coaching exchanges.
Interesting that our relations with NZ still annoy the middle eastern faction. And it isn't a surprise given there is no Saudi Arabia or Iran at this WC. I wonder if they will continue to disagree about us having a NZ club in the A-League? I expect so.
