A Sydney construction firm will get the lion's share of more than $28 million of work on WIN Stadium's new western grandstand, NSW Premier Kristina Keneally announced yesterday.
North Sydney-based Lipman Pty Ltd won a construction tender worth $20.8 million, beating three other tenderers, including the Unanderra branch of construction firm Project Co-ordination.
Lipman's portfolio of completed projects includes a grandstand at Penrith Stadium and the construction of the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.
"Construction of the new stand is expected to begin in October, and by June next year, the Dragons will play games on their spectacular new home ground," Ms Keneally said.
Construction work will, for the moment, cover only the $15.38 million first stage of the grandstand, which will have seating for 2302 spectators.
Plans for the second stage of the grandstand, including seating for 3538 spectators, food and drink premises and the roof structure, have been placed on exhibition until October 11.
The development application had to be split in two after it emerged the upper levels of the grandstand would overhang a footpath and road, breaching zoning rules.
When completed, the grandstand will provide seating for 5840 spectators, with the additional 3362 seats more than doubling the capacity of the old Sid Hayes Stand and boosting WIN Stadium's capacity to more than 22,500.
