Table topping Sydney FC have signed experienced Dutch defender Jordy Buijs until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 season. The 28-year old has made over 200 appearances in the Dutch top flight and is a ball-playing central defender who is known for his deadly set pieces.Buijs has represented Dutch clubs including Feyenoord, De Graafschap, NAC Breda and SC Heerenveen and became a fan favourite at a number of those clubs with his passion and mentality.Head Coach Graham Arnold says he will add a wealth of experience and quality to the Sky Blues defensive stocks.“We look forward to Jordy coming over to Australia and helping to continue our undefeated start to the season,” he said.“He comes with a very strong pedigree of over 200 games in the top-flight Eredivisie in Holland. “He is a free kick specialist and like our other four foreign players we expect him to improve our squad enormously.“He was unfortunate that his last club in Romania went bankrupt last month, but it means he comes to us fit and ready to play.“He has a good reputation and comes highly recommended from our Dutch network of contacts.”Buijs will arrive and begin training with his Sydney FC team mates early next week. Pretty happy with that. Looks a pretty decent signing on paper. Long time playing in Holland and still a good age.

Assuming he gets paid more than Jurman, and with them also trying to get a very $ (by local standards) Rhys Williams, Sydney have to be congratulated for doing a maginificant job of fitting all these players under their cap...

Why would you assume that? Seems the guy is coming from a club that was not even paying wages, come to a good country and join a club that is top of the league for 4 months and be guaranteed to get paid. Not sure he would be demanding too much. Also Rhys Williams isn't too concerned about $ either, having offered to pay out his own contract.

Yes because we obvouisly are trying to actively sign all of Papadopoulos, Williams, Thwaite and Bruijs and it wasnt the club looking at multiple options for one spot. Club had mentioned though that we'd saved money on the Redmayne/Vedran swap and Jurman was on a fair bit so there was definitely cash there to make one good signing.

never had a red card, averages only about 3 yellows per season, scored 3 penalties in a match once, strong at taking set pieces only major injury was out for 9 months in 2014/2015 with an ACL

Looks extremely promising, although you just never know with foreign signings. This could make or break our season.

Definitely looks promising! If he can gel with the team quickly the defence may be even more formidable then the first half of the season

Having watched some of his highlights I still don't know what to make of him. Looks more a Grant, Zullo replacement more than a Jurman one. Highlights can be deceptive but from them it looks like he's a defender who will take a lot of intercepts like Bosschaart and then unlike Bosschaart power forward into attack. Not sure how that will fit in with the system we are playing. It will be interesting to see how he goes. I don't recall having seen such a seemingly attack minded CB play in the a-league before.

The most promising thing about this signing is he played at Roda with Rostyn Griffiths. I would have thought Arnie would have really pushed Rostyn into if he's quality or not, and they both have the same reference to point in Patrick Zwaansvijk to compare to. So I imagine Arnie would have asked Rostyn for a direct comparison, and the signing would have been based off that advise.

Yup thats what I was thinking. More likely to be Arnies Dutch contacts through Breda than Griffiths.

just watching his video he seems like quite a character on the pitch, almost gascoigne-esque, quite an unusual type of centre back

looks solid on paper, but I haven't been able to find any good video of him defending. All the highlights I could randomly find were of free kicks, goals etc. Makes him seem like a really attacking player, not sure how that is going to go with us.

How many highlights videos has anyone seen of someone making cover tackles or clearing headers? None. Highlights are just that, the sort of things that grab people's attention. Getting a clean sheet won't get you on the news, but scoring the winning goal will.... So of course he shows his goals and not his tackles.
Hopefully he can defend though! Decent pedigree and age. Not many/any genuine ball playing defenders in the HAL. Could really boost our attack, so long as he's solid in defence. Can't see him being worse than Ryall though

He's got a resume Jurman or Ryall could never hope to match. Let's see what's left after his injury.
