We would like to announce to all our supporters that the 1st grade team of Sydney Olympic will be participating in the Steve Christoforidis Charity Cup that will take place in March this year.

The Steve Christoforidis Football Cup will be held at Lidcombe Oval on Sunday 6 March 2011 with all proceeds going to various charities to help fight depression and mental illness in honour of the former Football NSW Premier League player who passed away last year.

Together with Sydney Olympic, another seven football clubs with the likes of West Sydney Berries, Belmore Hercules, Hurstville City Minotaurs, Gladesville Ryde Magic, Stanmore Hawks and Wollongong Olympic will take part in the Cup and will be playing mini matches to honour the former striker, Steve Christoforidis.

This day is a legacy in the memory of Steve Christoforidis but also thousands of Greek-Australians who have battled and lost their lives to a silent but deadly killer of males and females in Australia today, “Mental Illness”.

All proceeds made on the day will go towards helping with the fight against mental illness the institutions include Beyond Blue, St Euphemia Greek Orthodox College, All Saints and St Spirydon to help with counseling youths and also the Greek aged care facility ‘To Elliniko Spiti’ to help with counseling families.

We are urging all our fans to support this event as it is an opportunity to show the power of our sport to help people in need. On the day there will also be many surprises for supporters of all ages.

Steve passed away last year, at Bankstown Train Station at the age of 38, he played for the Berries for nearly ten years, sad story.

Football NSW was saddened to hear the news that former West Sydney Berries legend Steve Christoforidis passed away on Friday 8th of October 2010.

Steve played at Canterbury Marrickville Olympic from the age of 13 and went on to play for fifteen years at the club which saw him feature in well over 450 games as a top class striker.

He was a one club man something of a rare trait in this game of ours. Steve was the Berries’ top scorer in 1992 and 1993 and was a well liked figure in the football fraternity as well as the Greek community.

Steve’s funeral details are as follows:

St Euphemia Greek Orthodox Church, Bankstown.

Thursday 14th of October 2010, 10am

The entire Football NSW family wants to pass its deepest condolences to the Christoforidis family.
