Sydney Olympic crowned inaugural Steve Christoforidis Hellenic Football Cup Champions

NSW Premier League outfit Sydney Olympic collected its first piece of silverware for 2011 after defeating Super League side West Sydney Berries 3-0 in the inaugural Steve Christoforidis Hellenic Football Cup played at Lidcombe oval on Sunday in front of well over two thousand spectators.
The Cup was shown as a legacy in the memory of former West Sydney Berries star Steve Christoforidis but also thousands of Greek-Australians who have battled and lost their lives to a silent but deadly killer of males and females in Australia today, “Mental Illness”.
All proceeds made on the day went towards helping with the fight against mental illness the institutions include Beyond Blue, St Euphemia Greek Orthodox College, All Saints and St Spirydon to help with counselling youths and also the Greek aged care facility ‘To Elliniko Spiti’ to help with counselling families.
Seven football club along with Olympic and the Berries contested in the Cup with Belmore Hercules, Hurstville City Minotaurs, Gladesville Ryde Magic, Stanmore Hawks Liverpool Olympic and Wollongong Olympic all played a pivotal role in playing mini matches to honour former West Sydney Berries star Steve Christoforidis.
There was also a special Exhibition Game on the day which saw Sydney Olympic Old Boys take on Canterbury Marrickville Old Boys with a number of ex-NSL stars taking part in what was a special moment for all who took part. Familiar names such as George Kalogeras, Steve Tolios, George Bouhoutsos, Spiro Hantzis, John Christou, Archie Kotsopoulos, John Xipolitas, Steve Karavatakis, Zoran Illic, Nick Orlic, Louie Dounis and Peter Katholos were just some of the legends that were on show on the day.
One of the main organizers on the day was West Sydney Berries’ Theo Mitrothanasis who was delighted with how the day went and the support the event received.
“The day was a great success and it was all for a special cause to create awareness of depression and honour one of the club’s favourite sons.
“All football games were contested in the spirit of the game and all were very close but I want to congratulate Sydney Olympic who were the victors of the first ever Steve Christoforidis Hellenic Cup.
“I would like to thank the sponsors, media, the teams that participated, the referees, the entertainment and the fans that attended.”
