North Geelong crushes Geelong in spiteful clash

NORTH Geelong Warriors secured the pre-season cup in style after convincingly sweeping aside Geelong at Stead Park last night, 4-0.

Warriors were rarely threatened after going 1-0 up, although the match did threaten to turn ugly on several occasions due to rash tackles.

Geelong ended up with 10 men after Lukas Lewinski was dismissed for two bookable offences although the toll could've been worse.

Shortly before half-time, James Agius caught Warriors captain Mijo Trupkovic with a high tackle.

The challenge appeared worthy, but the normally mild-mannered Agius got away with a yellow card.

In a half-time scuffle, Warriors defender Andrew Maclean was booked after confronting Agius. More pleasing for neutrals was the display by North and in particular Robert Zadworney.


The skilful winger looked the most likely player to unlock the massed Geelong defence and so it proved just minutes before the break.

An excellent long pass from Trupkovic found Zadworney in space, who danced around a defender, rounded goalkeeper Romeo Pulija and scored. Geelong, who attempted to sit back and hit North on the break, had to come out and play in the second half and it left gaps at the back.

Zadworney turned provider for North's second, teeing up Bojan Misjlenovic to blast home before a great run and cross from Reardo Luka allowed Matthew Demo to score, after nearly fluffing the opportunity.

Zadworney, fittingly, rounded off the win with a late fourth goal. Geelong will rue the sending off and the fact that the normally prolific Jasmin Ikanovic spurned several presentable chances when the game was scoreless, but the result was rarely in doubt. The victory was no less than Warriors deserved and capped a perfect tournament for the club, which ended with a 100 per cent record. In the third-placed play-off, Corio beat an under-manned Surf Coast 3-0.
