For good sakes I wish people would stop with this second Melbourne team business! A second Melbourne team would be a disaster! I don't know how things are in Sydney but Victorians are just too passionate, any derby game would result in brawls, voilence and all manner of evil. Afterwards the ridiculously pro AFL press would shout out so loudly it would kill the sport in Victoria.

A second team in Melbourne must happen eventually, maybe a third too. South Melbourne need not apply, obviously.
As for the article, Wollongong plans to bid in '09, along with Gold Coast, Townsville, and now maybe Tasmania.
Competition for expansion is looking healthy and can only be good for the game.

I Think its great, lets still the show from AFL, NRL and head down south. Something for the tasmanian people to be proud of. All they would have to do is find appropriate stadia, staff and backing. Great Idea. Look it would probably be the smallest club in the league, but look at my Mariners 5000 first game, and next season i've been forced to get membership to get a seat. Go the Devils!!!

all for a Tassie team myself, a parochial lot and not surprising given the opinions of some mainlanders! There'd be a real 'us and them' mentality for an FC Tasmania

Tasmania would be a great addition to the A-League !
Its an untaped resource, for some strange reason the AFL has failed to captitalize on it. Tasmania would be a smaller bid, but being a Mariners supporter and witnessing first hand how a smaller team can succeed I am fully for the bid.
I feel that Tasmania should come into the league during the second round of expansion.
A second Melbourne team is not needed agreed, rather a team from Geelong should be admitted with the Gold Coast next season. Townsville, Wollengong, Canberra and a Western Sydney team can fight it out for the last position.
The A-League should be ultimately looking to expand to a 14 team competition. Any more would take away from the standard for the time being..
