Parramatta FC ready squad ahead of NSW Premier League kickoff

PARRAMATTA FC coach Brian Dene won’t name a target for his side to achieve on the ladder ahead of its challenging return to the NSW Premier League next weekend.

The promoted club, under new ownership by the Granville District Soccer Football Association, will kick off its season against premiers Bonnyrigg at Melita Stadium on Sunday week.

Captain will again be midfielder Ben Delicata, but the Super League premiers have lost a few senior players.

Dene said that wasn’t due to ability, either.

``I think they all could have played, but we have budget restrictions through Granville,’’ he said.

``It’s money. We don’t have the funds to splash out what people are asking.

``But you still need good quality players, and I think we have that.’‘

While the Granville association is keen to tout its new Premier League club, it has not provided Dene with a far bigger budget.

``I think it will take time as the club moves on,’’ Dene said of the finances.

``It’s obviously a big commitment by the association, but you don’t want to send the association bankrupt.

``This is a good opportunity for players to play at the highest level.’‘

New Eagles for 2011 include last year’s Super League goalkeeper of the year, Tom Romic.

Dene was excited to have the former Macarthur Rams ‘keeper in the side.

``I believe there is interest from one A-League club,’’ Dene said.

``I know they’re going to come and look at him.’‘

Up front, Parramatta has added striker Almir Dizdaric.

He played for Bankstown last year and will provide options for the Eagles.

``We’ll use him as a target man,’’ Dene said. ``He brings other people into play and scores goals.’‘

Other recruits include defenders Peter Crevani from St George, and Nick McInerney from South Coast Wolves.

In a major boost to the Parramatta club, last years’ Premiership winning coach will continue in the role as 1st Grade Coach for the 2011 NSW Premier League season.

“I’m delighted to have finalised my position with the club. It is a great club to work for and they have been very good to me with regards my involvement with Head of Football Coaching at Newington College and the Australian Schoolboys team over the past three years. It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to continue to play my part.”

The back room staff of 2010 will almost remain the same. The only exception is experienced John Haynes has stepped down as 1st Grade Assistant Coach with the inclusion of Frank Mikuletic filling that role. Larry Savage will remain in the role of Goalkeeping Coach. Justin Bucciarelli will continue his role as coach of the under-20s for season 2011.

Before his role as 1st Grade Coach in season 2010, Dene spent the last 8 years in coaching youth football. In that time he has also completed his AFC/FFA A-Licence in 2001, a Bachelor of Sports Studies (Coaching) degree, a Bachelor of Physical Health Education (BPHE) degree and a Masters of Education (Coach Education) at the University of Sydney.

In December 2009, the FFA invited him to participate in the FIFA FUTURO III Course for Coaching Instructors’. One of the instructors on the course was current FFA Men’s Coach Holger Osieck and Dene knows his coaching is better for the experience.

Four (4) of those coaching years were with the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) as Assistant Coach to Kelly Cross and Jean-Paul De-Marigny before joining the Parramatta club in early 2008.

Granville Association President, Howard Groom recognises the experience and knowledge Dene brings to the table will be invaluable.

“For the past 3 seasons we have won the Super League 1st Grade Premiership, The U/20’s Championship and the Youth Club Championship twice since Brian has been here. This year we were Senior Club Champions again and were runners up in 2008”.

Groom said Dene’s presence would provide the young players coming through Granville Association and Parramatta FC with invaluable insight into what it takes to be a 1st Grade footballer at this club.

“We pride ourselves on being as professional a club as we can be at a semi-professional level and players must understand that being a 1st Grade footballer requires discipline and hard work”.

The club’s player recruitment drive has gone well in both 1st Grade and U/20’s. “It was time to freshen up in a few areas and I think we have done that and there are some very promising juniors coming through which I’m personally delighted about.

“I’m probably looking for an experienced striker as a priority at this stage of the season and we are currently having a look at a few trialists.”

The question that he answers the most lately is about where he feels the club will finish in 1st grade. “It is always a tough question to answer. Last week after we were beaten 5-0 at Bonnyrigg, I asked the players at Tuesday night training what did we learn from the experience? The players were pretty honest and open with their answers. Dene knows you learn more from losing than you do from winning.

The answer to “where are we going to finish? Dene will leave unanswered. I just want the players to work hard, play entertaining football by keeping their discipline and that is the key to a good season”.
