Charlestown City Blues FC v Football Mid North Coast Women’s Premier League Round 1, Match 1 Sunday 13th March 10am Adamstown Oval Charlestown City Blues defeated Football Mid North Coast 2-1 in the first match of this season’s Women’s Premier League.
With both teams new to the competition it was a much anticipated match between two unknown forces.
Neither team was to disappoint providing an action-packed, fast-faced game, with the teams meeting each other play for play.
At the half-time whistle both teams remained dead-locked on 0-0, despite a number of close shots from both teams.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half Charlestown player Brigitte Holt finally found the back of the net to take the lead.
However, Football Mid North Coast was hot on their heels, and soon evened the score with a goal from Melissa Norup.
With around 30 minutes left on the clock Mid North Coast Captain and mid-fielder Samara Schmitzer went down with a leg injury and had to leave the field.
Having Schmitzer out of action meant Mid North Coast had no extra players for substitutions, leaving the on-field players without a break.
With around 10 minutes remaining Brigitte Holt scored her second and last goal of the match, bringing victory for Charlestown.
Charlestown coach, Jim Foley said that the match was a definite “wake-up call” and despite the win the girls had a lot to improve on. He noted:
“The girls need to work on their self-respect, because without self-respect women’s football isn’t going anywhere.”
Both the Mid North Coast Coach Terry Burn, and Captain Samara Schmitzer were happy with the team’s performance but thought they all needed to work on their fitness.
Merewether Utd FC v Valentine Phoenix FC Women’s Premier League Round 1, Match 2 Sunday 13th March 12am Adamstown Oval Old rivals Merewether United and Valentine Phoenix met today in the second of three Round 1 matches in the Herald Women’s Premier League.
Though a close match, Merewether came out on top 6-4 greatly due to the five goals scored by striker Danielle Buttsworth.
Buttsworth scored the first early goal of the match, but Valentine soon came back with a swift but bizarre knee into the back of the net by Naomi Abbott.
Both teams were playing fast and fiery, despite the very hot weather, and mid-way through the first half the referee allowed a quick drink-break.
Merewether started to edge ahead with a second goal from Meagan Weir and another goal from Buttsworth.
Valentine picked up a second goal with a long shot outside the box from Tahlia Willis.
By the second half both teams were getting a little slower on their feet, but the goals didn’t stop coming.
Valentine’s Naomi Abbott scored again from well outside the 18 yard box and teammate Ane Havea scored with a tap into the net after outrunning the goal-keeper.
Merewether’s star of the day, Buttsworth, cleaned up another three goals against her former team to bring Merewether their 6-4 win.
Both sides picked up a handful of direct kicks for some rough play, but no cards were issued.
Briony Malcombe of Merewether also left the field with an ankle injury, but coach Col Blanch is optimistic for her quick recovery.
Blanch is also optimistic for Merewether’s chances this year.
“We didn’t have a great year last year, but I want to be up there, 1 or 2 this year.”
