Wet weather sees flood of goals

THE weekend's wet weather brought with it a flood of goals in the second round of the Gold Coast Premier League.
Despite two games being washed out, 22 goals were scored in the other four matches with three teams storming home with five goals.
Burleigh Heads were too good for Musgrave, winning 5-1 as Ben Longstaff notched his first hat-trick for the season.
After opening the scoring early, Burleigh Heads were up 2-1 at the interval before scoring three unanswered goals in the second half.
The win was also the first for Burleigh this season after being muscled out last week by Southport.
Senior coach Ken Clifford said the win gave his squad a morale boost as they look forward to next weekend's clash against Merrimac.
"We definitely needed the win," Clifford said.
"It was just bucketing down with rain so it turned into a bit of a slog-fest."
Striker Chris Lucas lead Palm Beach to a 5-2 lashing of the Gold Coast Knights at Palm Beach with his hat-trick in the sloppy conditions.
Last year's premiers were winning 5-0 with about 10 minutes to go before a penalty gave the Knight's their first notch on the score board.

The Knights second came about a minute later but it was a case of too little too late.
Palm Beach coach Steven Mee said he was pleased with what he saw in his team's performance.
"We played quite well and passed the ball around really well," Mee said.
Southport Warriors also managed to slot home five goals in their clash against Coomera as they continue their charge after scoring four goals last week.
It was a generous affair as five separate players put their names on the score sheet including last year's golden boot winner Jimmy Odenbreit.
Warriors coach Steven Clark said the team were embarking on a mission to reinstate Southport as one of the league's power houses.
"We have a fairly strong team and we want to get back to our glory days," Clark said.
"It's all about consistency though because it's only early days."
Tweed Valley Kings and last year's champions Broadbeach played out a 1-1 draw south of the border while the clash between Nerang and Surfers was washed out.
Yesterday's Merrimac melee between Magic United and Merrimac was also rained out as was the Gold Coast Stars first Q-League home game.
The fixture against the Capricorn Cougars was the second washed out game for the new Q-League franchise and coach John Stewart said it was becoming frustrating.
"The boys just want to play," Stewart said.
