Saw in the paper today that YoungHeart Manawatu are expecting two Uruguayan players to join the side for next season, with both described as "active in the Uruguayan First Division"
EDIT: Can't find a link as it was an editorial-style piece, but I would call Manawatu Standard frontpage fairly reputable.

IIRC it's worth about $700,000 just for qualifying, of which most goes to NZF, with around half split among the ASB Prem sides (around $50k each). ACFC hangs on to the other portion which includes bonuses for ACFC players and staff. Auckland's run to 5th in 2009 was worth about $2,000,000. As heard it, NZF once again took a big chunk with clubs getting $50-100k. Then when Waishitakere turned up, suddenly that $50,000 went missing from each and every club. Most ASB Prem sides allegedly operate on around $350,000 per season. As you can imagine, it hurts pretty bad when you suddenly lose 15% of your budget for reasons well beyond your control. Hopefully ACFC can win the O-League and go recoup our funds! [-o<

The 'gel-ness' factor of being so familiar would have helped NZ no doubt.

The 'gel-ness' factor of being so familiar would have helped NZ no doubt. Fair enough. We can only hope these Uruguayans come to fruition and show their wares regularly at El Memorial! If they are playing at a high-ish level it is quite possible that they are coming to New Zealand (as players have in the past) in an attempt to augur towards a move into the A-League. Dreams are free :)
