Goalkeeping Tutors Workshop held in Canberra
Monday, 4 April 2011
National Community Coach Education Manager, Norm Boardman, recently coordinated the second Tutor workshop for Goalkeeping Tutor’s. Ably assisted by Dean May, ( Tasmanian Institute of Sport Coach) national Goalkeeping coach Tony Franken led the weekend which was a huge success.
Being the second of the ventures since the courses had been rewritten the desired outcome was to find out what was working and what if anything needed to be adjusted as well as providing an opportunity for those who already had an accreditation to upgrade their qualifications and gain some valuable feedback.
Every State and Territory was represented with Western Australia sending two delegates.
Goalkeeping being a specialist position naturally requires more detailed coaching but the overall methodology of C.H.A.N.G.E.I.T. and guided discovery used on all Community coaching courses remained the same throughout.
Since the courses have been rewritten some 40 Goalkeeping coaches around the country have had the advantage of attending courses conducted by their member federations, the content of the courses has been carefully scrutinised and prepared by Tony and Dean ensuring that all coaches who attend the courses are left with no doubt as to what is expected technically from our up and coming custodians.
Most importantly we are providing a generic message of what is required from our young Australian goalkeepers, no matter what member federation they are associated with. Many, if not all of the techniques covered are used by our number 1 goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer who is one of the most highly regarded shot stoppers in world football.
Keep an eye on your member federation’s website for details of upcoming courses.

Thanks Joffa.
I did this session with Tony Franken as I know little about keeping.
It was mainly about keepers organising the defence. It also involved keepers decision-making - when to come out and stay on the line.
The integral role of the keeper as a sweeper was emphasised.

I was one of the 15 GK coaches that took part in the Pilot program of the new GK Certificate in Vic. I've waited 12 months now - I want to do the GK license / diploma and have sent several e-mails to the FFV / FFA regarding the dates for the sessions for the next levels, and have never heard anything back.
Wish I was up in Sydney - these things seem to be ran more frequently up that way!

That lack of response is terrible.
Could you try ringing FFV?
I've had a few email problems recently.

I've had replies - but each time it's been - "Thank you for the interest, we've added you to our mailing list, and will let you know when the next courses are scheduled".
But 12 months later - no courses.

I find this disgraceful.
Somone at FFV is being paid and not doing their job properly.

Actually - I got a reply today asking me to keep an eye on the FFA's website for scheduled courses. I had a look - there are no GK courses scheduled currently in Aus.
