I think this thread has run its course, RedsUnited and Afro and company have asked valid questions and have been given an answer...now the thread would appear to be off topic and degenerating into a slinging contest and therefore I am locking it.

also if any business could get $150k
spent around $50 to produce it over the vpl and nswpl then what you waiting for boom its business logic plus it would be good for football and in the offseasons like this it would rate with all fans.

each NSWPL club would give you guys $5k a piece to run news on the comp
look into it, it would be good for the game and a good way for you guys to get what looks like much needed cash

Quote:Also it's impossible for us from an email address and a user name alone to determine who is likely to be interested in which email offer. I understand that in some regards. But something like Sydney FC pertaining largely to people living exclusively in Sydney is going to be key and it is obviously going to be more beneficial to them to give their local fan base exclusive attention - especially when given that you select which state you live in when you sign up. Maybe you should even consider adding a 'which A-League club is your favourite?' dropdown to the sign-up form? That said, this thread is giving them more exposure than they origianlly paid for...so I guess as long as someone's annoyed by their advertising they're getting more bang for their buck, right? As for whether or not the law differentiates the 'commercial' emails, they may not, but your users do and perhaps this is another aspect for more effective advertising on the site, thus allowing you to actually charge more, for more effective targeted responses. I'm not sure whether your 'sponsors' will see it that way, but perhaps it's something that the site want to look at. Guest, I also found a little something for you, because Andy's too polite to say it: It's so you can get over yourself, Keyboard warrior. If it's not big enough then I'm sure I can find a bigger one.

Hi Afroman
I'm not sure where I've been condescending...however if you feel that I have then I apologise - certainly not the intention. My only intention was to respond to the people here who were upset by it, explain the importance of revenue from things like this in keeping this site in existence and free.
I have already spoken to Sydney FC and fed back your feedback and showed them this thread....so I do take on board your criticisms and act on them.
You may consider there a difference between Sydney FC's email and a "win a pair of boots" email - but the law does not - they are all tagged commercial communications and as such can only be sent to an "opt-in" email database.
Also it's impossible for us from an email address and a user name alone to determine who is likely to be interested in which email offer.
On the issue of unsubscribing there is a link at the bottom of the email just below where it has your email address - beneath the body of the email.
If you want me to take you off just drop me a PM with your email address and I'll do it for you.
Cheers
Andy

Harden the fuck up and press the delete button
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Quote:clearly outlined why you are receiving this stuff and gave you information on how to stop receiving it. Where you can unsubscribe was not mentioned. What the hell?! Of course, now you come in here with all your moderating neutrality and start name-calling when I'm trying to suggest a more targeted and specific marketing scheme for their emails. Of course, I'm being forced to read deal with it if it's in my inbox, I have to actually READ it to see whether it's drivel or not. Especially when it's coming from exactly the same source as the newsletter.

Guest wrote:Afro you could just ask to be removed from the list..... Don't address me like I'm the only person expressing some kind of displeasure at it. You could also stick your face in a meat grinder, but you haven't yet (what a pity). Quote:It's an advertising campaign. You've opted in.
You don't open your newspaper that you have subscribed to and then pick and choose what adverts appear (googleNewspapers will make this happen one day, I'm telling you) - you have chosen to read that paper and the adverts that come along with it, whether they advertise Ford, Channel 7, a box of tampons, or Sydney FC.
If you don't want those adverts, unsubscribe. You'll also lose the other adverts that you MIGHT be interested in, but them's the breaks. Your metaphor is faulty because there are NO adverts in FFT's "newspaper" that gets emailed out. If the advertising was in their newsletter I wouldn't really care, that's to be expected. But when you're sending me irrelevant advertising wasting my time, my inbox capacity and the website's resources, why bother? The magazine asks "how can we make our website better" every six months and hits up our emails asking for suggestions, that we partake in their survey, etc. in order for them to further develop the user friendlyness and efficiency of the website. Now that a user (or six) has something to say to help 'progress' the website they're being rubbished and condescended to by the magazine publisher and some of the website's users. What a farce. Think about how much more effective the advertising of the website would be if it was targeted to appropriate users. Instead of going "le sigh, more advertising from FFT" *delete*, people might go "Oh, Adidas have a new boot out" and click and read. You inundate people with advertising and they're going to stop reading it.

No because in our society we demand to have everything suited to our individual needs, wants and desires regardless of thinking about the bigger picture and others ;)

Perhaps FFT needs to look at more niche marketing too. There's not much point in sending people who live in Melbourne advertising pieces to a Sydney game when we clearly state that we live in Melbourne in the aforementioned sign-up. +1 I don't mind recieving offers and advertising relevant to me, but I do not appreciate getting regular advertisements to travel more than 500km to see a team I despise. Again, if it was a big friendly relevant to my potential interest: cool. Sydney in a competition my own team is taking part in: not cool. It's an advertising campaign. You've opted in.
