Security guards attacked at soccer match in Heidelberg West

Jessica Craven From: Herald Sun April 13, 2011

TWO security guards were assaulted when they refused to allow a group of men enter a Melbourne soccer match without paying the entry fee.

The attack happened before the match between Heidelberg United and Melbourne Knights at the Olympic Reserve in Heidelberg West on Sunday evening.

About 15 to 20 men aged between 18 and 30 approached the front gates just before 6pm, refusing to pay the entry fee.

After they were confronted, police believe some of the men assaulted two security guards.

One of them, a 43-year-old man, was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with head injuries.

The other, a 46-year-old man, was taken to the Austin Hospital with head and leg injuries.

Three men aged 44 to 57 were also injured, while attending to the security guard.

They were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Police have arrested two men, who were released pending summons.

The offenders are described as being of Caucasian appearance and aged between 20 and 30.

Detectives from Banyule CIU are urging anyone who may have witnessed the assault or anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
