the qld td said that the national curriculum wasnt setup for the next harry kewells of this world and is intended for the other players . So what does it take to become a top player, nature or nurture.

He is just reminding me of something he said years ago. Whilst it may be true in my case, some quality players fell by the way thanks to ppl like Lonton. Others whose reputation is far greater than their ability are still being peddled as the greatest ever.

Because the cream keeps whipping itself mercilessly, or because the cream was just born tastier than anyone else? :-k

The answer's in the latest issue of 442 in an article called 'The Talent Myth' by Matthew Syed. Syed is the author of 'Bounce' which is a must read for anyone interested in what it takes to achieve excellence.

Always? Always. Read my lips; there are no Kewells or Cahills hacking it out in suburban U15's just waiting to be discovered.

I've not read Outliers but it looks similar. Have a read of Syed's article. His book's inspirational as is his life story. Through sheer hard work he became a high academic and sporting achiever (ok it was table tennis but he was a commonwealth champ). The combination of the two areas of achievement makes him one of the most fascinating sports journalists going. He often features on podcasts discussing sport. His love for sport and belief in its power for good validates all of us who think sport is an important and rewarding activity.

According to Craig Foster, when he addressed 130 local players, he said TIm Cahill was overlooked for rep sides when he was younger because he was considered too small. CF also stated that all players would be overlooked for rep teams at some stage in their career. Emphatically, he suggested it was how one reacted to the inevitable non-selection which was critical.

Always? I have a book by Matthew Hall plotting the careers of most Australian players up to about five years ago. Apart from Kewell and Viduka, they all seemed to get one very lucky break after feeling they were never going to succeed in Europe. Cream doesn't always rise to the top.

f1dave wrote:But these are top players, right? So the cream rose? It was the cream and it rose. Nevertheless, the players thought they were very lucky to get a break after so many previous European coaches had deemed them surplus to requirements. The players considered there was a very good chance they would never have made it. David Zdrilic wrote a good article about succeeding in Europe, which was posted in the Australian section. I'll cut and paste it here from if I can find the article.

According to Craig Foster......... You lost me right there. I've never seen any talented kid overlooked due to size in the Sydney rep scene. It's a complete fabrication to suit the SBS weather girls dirty little agenda. Not sure if Cahill played metro reps (11's and 12's) but he was certainly a PYL player after this. It would be interesting for Peter De Roo to clarify and expand on this subject. I'll ask our state TD to pontificate on this subject next time I see him.

[I've never seen any talented kid overlooked due to size in the Sydney rep scene. Thats good but up here a club that participates in the rep program has selected its under 12 team already, the players are under 10 at the moment.

Any fathers coaching their own children in rep sides there? Most of us have awful experiences coaching our own kids, but it is often better one to one than with a whole team. Yet a few mates of mine have kids who don't mind their parents coaching them at all. It tends to be the exception not the norm though. Edited by Decentric: 19/7/2011 11:12:54 PM
