+xHi all, been a long time since I posted here, due to no computer, and holy shit what a clusterf#ck the last few seasons has been. I think we have to look at things realistically. Its not 2012 and Ange is gone, his 'legacy' can be found buried somewhere deep in the tip at Chandler. Brisbane Roar has just finished a 27 game season shipping 71 goals, the head coach left halfway through the season and 13 players are off contract. There's no relegation and the only thing to strive for besides A League glory are ACL spots which we are not ion contention for. The league is young and still maturing and doesn;t attract huge sponsorship dollars. It's the perfect league for coaches to cut their teeth and yes, we could have given Warren Moon a go, we could have gone after Kurz or Rudan, but we've gone with Robbie Fowler and that's just about where our place in the football world is, Mourinho/Wegner/Pep/Klopp and the like are not coming to coach here in the forseeable future. The news of Grant as his assistant is promising and a huge step in the right direction as he seems to have a fantastic pedigree from an academy/scouting/education perspective. I agree with those who don't want to see Pepper in the CB role next season, it's not his position, he gets found out time and time again and isn't young enough to improve as a starting CB any more than he has. The other off-contract players are: | Aug 24, 1987 (31) | | 30.06.2019 | - | £900k | | Jan 11, 1988 (31) | | 30.06.2019 | - | £450k | | Mar 27, 1984 (35) | | 30.06.2019 | - | £360k | | Oct 19, 1991 (27) | | 30.06.2019 | - | £315k | | May 9, 1985 (33) |

O'Toole is the only one we should keep. Welcome back. Hope you keep posting - this Roar page has remained very healthy despite the last two seasons

If there’s a benefit to finishing in the bottom half it’s this - next season the plan seems to be sides finishing in this years Top 5 will play each other 3 times and those in the bottom 5 twice ... finish in the bottom 5 and you’ll play sides from the top 5 only twice while facing your fellow cellar-dwellers 3 times.

But the moment the FFA caved in to Fox Sports and limited the competition to no more than 26 rounds the draw was going to be uneven. In the FFAs mind it “justifies” the finals system even more. And with 12 teams the year after it’s going to be around fir a few seasons at least.

And with 12 teams the year after it’s going to be around fir a few seasons at least. In that case it should just be a random draw for next year (given it's a one off). Or do it so that everyone plays an equal number of top half and bottom half teams in the 3rd round next season. Then a simple rotating draw after that, so that over two years (or how ever many) you still play each club the same number of times.

O'Toole is the only one we should keep. Surely keep D’Agostino. Yes he’s seemed disinterested at times but he gets goals and assists. Working under Fowler he should improve out of sight and should develop into the player we know he can be. I've been disappointed with D'aggers attitude but I agree that Fowler might be able to get the best out of him. I'd rather persevere with him than replace him with another player of similar age and potential. I'd also keep O'toole and Brendan White if he's willing to stay as backup. Not sure what the youth team keeper is like.

Never been a fan of Squires. He is only viewed, in my mind , because he is the only cartoon about football. Always reminds me of a twelve year old doing cartoons on the back of his schoolbook .Sorry not my cup of humour ..naive at best .

As bad as the defenders have been this year, it is a continuation from what John A built. The disgraceful semi final loss to WSW (as well as the lack of player fitness) should have seen JA get the boot there and then. Unfortunately, the problems were allowed to fester and grow. The crap defending is a reflection of the entire squad. Yesterday's game was a prime example, where on numerous occasions you would not see players like Lopez or D'Agostino getting back to cover. The whole attitude of the squad stinks. I hope that Fowler and Grant can at least restore some pride and fitness into whatever squad they build.

Is the consensus that D’Aggers has been playing well since returning from the Olyroos?
I didn’t really pay him much attention before his brace against Korea, but since then I’ve been keeping a close eye on his performances for Brisbane and he’s looked great to me. Chalks up a large amount of goals and assists relative to where the team has been at.
Even yesterday he scored and won a penalty in the 69 minutes he was on the field.

He's got the talent it's whether if he has the right attitude and desire to make it was my concern. He did well since coming back for the Olyroos.

I probably should have worded that as ‘goal involvements’ which is what I meant - I see he’s only scored the 1 goal in the 5 appearances since returning from Olyroos.

Daggers has good speed, size, and aggression, a decent shot, but only average skills and technique and really really poor decision making. It is so frustrating to watch him continually miss a player with a 10m pass or try to play an impossible flick through two opposition players. Maybe Fowler can help ...

There’s only one A League striker coming off contract that would fit our salary bracket - O’Donnovon

O'Donovan would be a good signing if supplemented with quality visa signings around him.
However if discipline is an issue with Bautheac.....

I've secretly been hoping Daggers would hit his straps, as he's a junior from my old club here on the GC, and I'm not sure if his recent patch of okayish form has done enough to persuade me that he has earned the right to stay. In fairness to him, he appears to be a natural striker/poacher but has been played out of position by JA over the last three years, being stuck out wide or dropped in behind.
Also, where the fuck has that long throw been for the last few years???
I'm really torn, because the vast majority of his performances don't warrant an extension.

+x+xJust watching the game. Apparently 71 goals is the most scored against in the A League history in the regular season. The commentators seemed to suggest this. A RECORD SEASON after all!!!! Does Aloisi take credit for this record as well? Might as well since he has all the other bad records with Roar. CCM are trying really hard to take the record off us. Up to 69 against for the season and 30 minutes to go.

+x+x+xI'd have Tongyik over Pepper and Bowles as a backup CB. Given a full pre-season, I think he could do well. He has certainly shown some signs that he can be a commanding presence in the backline. Give him a solid defensive partner and he could do well. To me Tongyik looks like an accident waiting to happen. Needs 3-4 touches to bring the ball under control and can’t get his physical presence in the right place to use it. As an attacking threat at corners he basically gets in the way. IMO Pepper has played better than Tongyik in every game, yet Pepper is the one people pick on?? All just opinions Waz. To me, Pepper is as good as he is ever going to get, and isn't up to starting level. Tongyik has come in mid-season, not having played football for a while, and needing to adapt to a system (or lack of system) that even players who had the full pre-season with Aloisi couldn't get. He is young and can be moulded, and he provides a big physical presence that we are sorely lacking in the backline. If we are talking about a bench spot, I'd much rather gamble on the potential of a younger player in his natural position, than an older player, playing out of position, who has reached his peak and isn't at the required level. This.

Having said that, CCM have improved their previous A-League record of Worst Season Difference. Was -37 but they have blown that one out of the water. Our consistent ability to score almost enough goals each week throughout the season has deprived us of the double. Honours shared...
