+x+x+x+xDid any one see the article in the Courier Mail in line about the owners giving RF pass mark? It was pay walled Brisbane Roar are knocking on the door of the top six but can Robbie Fowler’s stint as manager be considered a success? Brisbane Roar’s owners are pleased with the progress of the team under Robbie Fowler, saying the Liverpool legend was working towards a “long-term plan”. After a slow start to their maiden A-League campaign under Fowler, the Roar are unbeaten in their past four matches and knocking on the door of the top six. Roar vice-chairman Chris Fong, who is also the advisor to the club’s Indonesia-based owners the Bakrie Group, insisted all was going to plan in Brisbane’s recovery from their shocking 2018-19 season when they finished second last with just four wins from 27 matches. “We wanted to take our time finding a new coach, and we made a decision with Robbie because we liked his plan and his thoughts,” said Fong, who was at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday to watch Brisbane’s 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix. “We also wanted to give someone an opportunity, and we wanted him to bring his connections in, and it’s worked. “We’re very happy with where things are going and we’ve got a long-term plan.” Fong said the Bakries never expected immediate results under Fowler. “We knew it would take him a while. He needed to make some adjustments, which at the moment are still going on when you see that we have just signed Corey Brown and Scott McDonald in this transfer window. “It’s about rebuilding the squad and it takes time to do that. We’ve changed the way we’re playing and it takes the players a while to get used to that as well. “We could have gone with a younger Australian coach but we didn’t feel we were ready for that yet. “In terms of Robbie’s background, his pedigree, his football experience … it’s been very helpful.” Fowler’s recruitment has come under the microscope, having brought to the club a host of players from the lower leagues of British football. However, Fong said Fowler had the trust of the owners. “It doesn’t mean he gets everything right all the time. I don’t think any coach has,” Fong said. “It’s always a work in progress and it’s going in the right direction.” Fong also defended the club’s decision not to sign any marquee players who are paid outside the salary cap. “We don’t have a marquee player but that was also the way Robbie looked at it,” he said. “We’re not necessarily agreeing with that philosophy of a club built around one player. “We don’t feel like we’re the right club to bring in a big-name player near the end of their career, like (Sydney FC did with Italian great) Alessandro Del Piero.” I find this comment puzzling. What would make a club "ready" to appoint a young Aus coach, the wooden spoon? The guts of the Football Department was ripped out 5 years ago when Mulvey and Stead left. The Aloisi/Moore years did nothing to fix it and there were accusations of nepotism etc. as we all remember With Fowler’s appointment they restructured the Dept but still lack long term stability. It’s actually a smart comment but one they could explain to fans better.
Today you’ve got Moon and Stefanutto both in there reporting separately to the Head Coach, whereas before everyone reported to JA who reported to Jakarta.
Moon will most likely be the next coach now you have confused me ...Moon and Steff report to Head coach ...under Aloisi everybody reported to head coach ...how is that different ? I assume you meant that Alosi reported to Jakarta and Fowler reports to Pourre ???

Moon will most likely be the next coach now you have confused me ...Moon and Steff report to Head coach ...under Aloisi everybody reported to head coach ...how is that different ? I assume you meant that Alosi reported to Jakarta and Fowler reports to Pourre ??? It worked like this: JA reported to Jakarta. The Football Dept reported to JA.
It now works like this:
Only the Chairman can hire/fire the HEAD COACH RF reports locally to the CEO Steff (Head of Football Dept) reports to CEO Moon (Head of Academy) reports to CEO
* The Football Dept (FD) is responsible for Club Culture * The Academy Head (TD) is responsible for playing style * The Head Coaches run their teams within the parameters set by FD/TD and have a peer to peer relationship with them
(It operates like a Board of Directors would do - it’s not an unusual set up in mature clubs)
Now it’s almost impossible for one man to fuck it up, unlike in the last

All final applicants put up plans for how they would fix the Roar. Robbie's plan was solid enough to convince many people that he could do it. The owners are saying that we are on track and moving in the right direction. We do not have the marquees that many wanted and expected, but we are becoming reasonable competitors without them and just maybe we can make 4th place if we continue to improve. Regardless of ladder position, by season's end we can be good enough to beat Sydney on a good day - if we continue with the path we are on. The quote from Chris Fong said Robbie was building a long term solution - so why not start with solid workers who show some signs of being better than that, build the team for a year showing improvements along the way, end up as genuine competitors by finals time, then buy the marquees for next season that we need to fill out whatever does not grow from within and to go up a level? No instant result; but a better season in my eyes already. I too give Robbie a pass based on changes he has made so far and where we are at this moment. He needs to continue in this vein until we have a fully functioning team producing consistent good football before he gets a season pass from me - but I am feeling more confident in our ability to get there every week. Owners are with it in my view - enough for this orange supporter to be grateful for their money and vision.
When I wear their colours, I am the club.

One thing last game - The Den were huge in contribution and voice again. Was it just the rain that had them all together or are things starting to work better there again? Loved it - well done any of you who are in it.

Loved it - well done any of you who are in it. It was a deliberate effort. The drum station has been moved to the middle, some new faces brought in, some old faces brought back. Mind you, it always gets louder in the rain - it’s a thing

It's the only plausible reason why they would entertain a foreign rookie coach and a plan with low grade players.

His “low-grade players” are starting to perform and prove that where they came from is irrelevant - Inman is total class, O’Shea is now getting the plaudits he deserves, Gillesphey is making the team of the week spot his own with regular performances to match.
ROD looks to have failed, Holloway not far behind but that’s just two failures. That’s not bad compared to several other clubs and certainly not bad for a rookie coach.
There’s every evidence now that Fowler knows what he’s doing and, just like Gerard at Rangers who was appointed with the same experience, if he’s given time should go very well.
His analysis is intelligent and he’s got the courage to make changes which is something badly lacking in Roar coaches since, well since Ange.

You should come and join us 💪 No grandmonsters should be that close to that environment ;) I try and do my part to get some active interest going on the sunny side. There's already a few more people willing to get in on claps and basic chants. As long as we have The Den to encourage them I think we will eventually get decent round ground participation. Most people feel like they would look like idiots or be isolated if they sing/clap/chant. Time will fix some of that but our football crowds tend to sit back and watch in appreciation up here - Socceroos games show that. Some simple repetitive chants one step above Brisbane clap clap clap (which people are joining in with increasing number) might help - but I have not thought of anything useful yet. Hey Keeper, leave our balls alone All in all, you're just another prick who was tall on the end of other modified lyrics for The Wall is the most crowd encouraging I have come up with so far but getting a group right with the timing/rythmn would not be easy. I have wondered about a side to side chant as basic as (East)BRIS (West)BANE (all)ROAR but can't see it getting off the ground. One thing, if anyone on here has enough involvement - increasingly speeding up Brisbane Clap Clap Clap just drops so many people out when it gets faster. You can't put in gusto and enthusiasm while you are racing it but starting slow and holding at a medium pace would probably keep more voices active and co-ordinated.

Questioning the original plan by the club / owner. Mediocrity is something I struggle to get excited about. My point with marquees was what if O'Neill, Mauk, O'Shea, Inman or any others had turned out to be brilliant. If we had a marquee in that spot they might not develop. If we had a marquee in that spot we might have two brilliant players in one position at the expense of a needed marquee elsewhere. We have some potential greats showing form already. What is wrong with a genuine rebuild season like this one where we get better as the season goes, end up strong, competitive and watchable, then step it up next season with a couple of marquees to where people would like us to be right now? Salary cap means we don't buy a fully functional brilliant team in season 1 of a rebuild. We take promise from wherever it was spotted, co-oridnate and develop it, then tweak and boost it once it is a stable and effective platform. This is the vision that I think Robbie has and the owners have bought into, and I have no problem standing behind that - other than telling us up front might have gotten more people onside from the start if that was the case.

Footnote to ground chants: In my mind a mexican wave style chant starting in The Den with BRIS first time round BANE second time round then everyone on their feet with ROAR when it finished its second lap would be awesome if people joined in. SOC CER ROOOOS would be a similar effect.

also bringing in true marquees that actually have good effects on the football side has been pretty hit and miss in the history of the a-league. for every Shinji Ono there has been at least one if not two Piovocarris. Even Honda on big bucks was not really that effective. the only real proven effective use of the marquee money has been keeping players that have come over as cap space players and earned upgraded marquee contracts.
broich came over as a cap space player, ninkovic, castro, im pretty sure ALF, Rojas all started as a cap space players and definitely deserved upgrades. the list goes on. saying that though with our current squad there was no-one from last season (apart from maybe eric) that deserved marquee money to keep them here, so i think robbie probably should have pushed a bit harder to use the money to bring at least one player here on a one year deal (particularly in the DM role) .

When Adelaide won with Amore they were last after 8 rounds (or thereabouts) so what you say makes a lot of sense. Inman was once seen as a Socceroo in the making (when signed by Newcastle United ??), and O'Neill is still relatively young and has had EPL (sort of) experience. Mauk does seem to have been left behind at this stage, but in the other 3 you mention we have a good base to be excited about next year, for sure. Hopefully things continue to gell over the last half of this season and we can have an impact on the final series. Maybe a marquee striker would round out the team next year.

What ever happened some of the old den members? From around 2014? Some of those faces are never to be seen at games anymore. Curious to know what's happened.

+xWhat ever happened some of the old den members? From around 2014? Some of those faces are never to be seen at games anymore. Curious to know what's happened. i know a couple of them got fed up with the club/stadium not allowing swearing in chants and were generally not happy with the club or the direction the den were going (ie they didnt like how PC/"family Friendly" the den was getting seemingly giving up to heightened security)

Lots n lots of people been burnt by ffa, stadium, security, each other, no doubt the club too.

WSW Fans stole a YF banner one year. They toured it around NZ for a few days while on holiday. Posting photo's of it in tourist spot around the North Island. If my memory serves me right it did make it way back to Wellington

Being a football supporter in Australia should come with a Long Service Medal 🏅 If only the club would remember that...many fans have been around much much longer than most at the club itself have ...including the owners . They basically show no respect for long term members . Last year the Broncos hosted Foundation members in the Broncos box for one of the games (admittedly Broncos foundation members have been members since 1988 ) Friends of ours who are foundation members said they were treated like Royalty .Justin Hodges sat with them and chatted for quite a while whilst they watched the game and were brought drinks . They were beside themselves. That is how you respect your fans . I am not suggesting the Roar should do this exactly but it illustrates the difference in attitude to their loyal fans by the Broncos .

I don’t know this for a fact, it’s purely my suspicion, but I don’t think the club has the records from season 1 to know who is a foundation member.
I will try and find out for sure.

A couple of seasons back they had some database or system issues I know. Dates of birth were wrong, Member Since was wrong, people fell out of my group. I think they recreated my record in some way with a new member number, but the Member Since side was not right. I am not a foundation member - although I have been going to games since then (my fault) - but the system may have been completely replaced since Season 1. Lucky I am happy being a member, supporting the club and getting a member pack - but at some point 'years of membership' might mean something more and I would be sad to have lost some of my history. Would all be provable though.
When I wear their colours, I am the club.

I would be very happy to make finals this year and then build on that next year. We need to find our next broich and berisha.

Its kind of like Michael Jordan, there will only ever be one, sadly it will be very hard to find a combo like them two legends again in their prime. Of course we still have to keep looking though like you said, Broich was around 29 when he came to Brisbane and Berisha was around 26.

He’s swapped three defeats for three wins this season which is good.
I’ve watched the various forum discussions on the Bakries so called “pass mark” for RF, most of the commentary has been negative which I think is unfair - at best/worst the jury is out for me and it’s way too soon to be drawing conclusions.
Over the first 4-5 games this season he could have picked up more points/wins but didn’t.
Over the second 4-5 games he might have dropped a few more points but not many.
And over the last 4-5 games he’s unbeaten in 4 and hasn’t lost since December the 13th - that’s all got to be building confidence in the team including coaches.
It’s not a stretch to put this team on 25 points and third place - but they haven’t been consistent enough, don’t score enough goals, and are prone to conceding that first goal which is a killer.
But out a functioning 6 and 9 in this team and I’d be confident they’d be third not seventh (with a game in hand).
It’s fine margins in the HAL this season and RF has at least shown he’s got the balls to change things up, dropping ROD his vice-captain, bringing in McDONALD and Brown, first half subs, double subs ... irrespective of results he’s clearly got a plan and is prepared to ditch anyone that’s not helping that.
With JA he looked like he played favourites, Fowler doesn’t do that and again that’s a huge improvement and for me, a necessary trait in a coach.
Of course fans want better football, more goals, more wins, trophies, and are rightly impatient for all of that. But at the same time there’s a fascinating situation right under their noses where there’s more positives than negatives and over the next 4-5 games we’ll get a good idea of what Fowler has actually achieved
