Eagle Hatzis appeals five-match ban

BLUE Eagles midfielder Tony Hatzis has called upon one of the state's finest sports lawyers to fight an extraordinary five-game ban.

Blue Eagles secretary Paul Giordano said the club would launch an appeal against Hatzis' expulsion, confirming the midfielder was now heeding legal advice.

"We are in the process of launching an appeal," Giordano said.

"Once we have all the relevant information and witnesses we will forward it to the FFSA."

The midfielder was handed punishment during the Football Federation SA's disciplinary committee meeting on Wednesday night where Hatzis was charged with an offence but the FFSA has failed to disclose why he was suspended.

However, FFSA officials stated Hatzis will miss Saturday's clash against Campbelltown at Newton after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in last weekend's 0-0 draw with Croydon.

The FFSA also declared Saturday's suspension was unrelated to the longer ban.

Hatzis was summoned to the FFSA's headquarters after a report following the clash against Western Strikers on July 30.

The Advertiser understands the only evidence the FFSA's disciplinary committee had against Hatzis was from a player from the Western Strikers who had complained to the referee about being abused during the Azzurri's 2-0 win.

Meanwhile it appears that the fight for Super League survival could be a false dawn.

Speculation is pointing to the 2012 competition being extended to include more clubs and to be reduced to two leagues rather than the current three tier format.

But if that doesn't happen the match of the round is at The Paddocks where Para Hills (eighth) faces seventh placed Raiders with either team set to be dropped to Premier League status if Croydon (ninth) or bottom placed Modbury earn maximum points.

Adelaide City can claim the minor premiership with a win over Croydon at Adelaide City Park while MetroStars sill has hope of the title if it can overcome Galaxy at TK Shutter Reserve.

SUPER LEAGUE FINAL MINOR ROUND

Saturday - 3pm - Adelaide City v Croydon at Adelaide City Park; Modbury v Western Strikers at Jet Park; Campbelltown v Blue Eagles at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre; MetroStars v Galaxy at TK Shutter Reserve; Para Hills v Raiders The Paddocks.

Interesting that the FFSA want to convert the top three tiers into two. Probably better off that way.
