Spiranovic sisters chase premiership
| August 26th, 2011
Laura Spiranovic has won the Golden Boot in the Victorian Women's Premier League.
A PAIR of Geelong sisters are set to grab a slice of the limelight enjoyed by their famous soccer-playing brother by taking part in the grand final of the Victorian Women's Premier League.
Laura and Amelia Spiranovic have been instrumental in the success of the South Melbourne women's team this season, both starring in last week's 3-1 qualifying final win over Sandringham.
The sisters will play either Casey Comets or Sandringham next weekend as South Melbourne bids to win the title after finishing second during the regular season.
Laura and Amelia's older brother is Matthew Spiranovic, who has played seven times for the Australian national team.
But the sisters have become stars in their own right, with Amelia captaining South Melbourne and Laura winning the golden boot with 26 goals.
Laura, 19, said that she was nervous ahead of her first grand final, but confident following a prolific season. "We always believed we could get to the grand final, but it's about being disciplined and everyone doing their job," she said.
"It's nice getting the golden boot. I think there's been a better connection with the midfield and the coaching has been good."
Laura said that having soccer-loving family father Michael used to play for local side North Geelong has helped progress her career.
"Having Amelia play in the same side has helped on a playing level and also on the mental and emotional side," she said.
Laura is due to have a trial with Melbourne Victory's women's team next week as she attempts to take her soccer to the next level.
