Current Ratings (not including current round)

Foxtel
NRL: 249k
AFL: 191k (down 28% in 2 weeks)

Exactly as I predicted on these forums a few weeks ago - once the first round sparkle wears off & the marquee games are gone, the ratings plummet.

Seemingly the same as what happened in A-league. Perhaps this is the natural pattern that ratings work with sports on fox??

Our AFL friends always try to say that ratings only wane in SOCKAH.

Strayian Rulz is allegedly impervious to ratings drops - it's strong all through the whole season.

With all AFL games broadcast this season, the myths about the popularity of Strayian Rulz as a National sport will be exposed this year.

If the ratings continue to decline we'll be back to last year's level

Except Foxtel paid a mint in the hope it would grow subscriptions. Being the first season of the new deal, I'd say they would be banking on people taking subscriptions out as the season goes on, so ratings should go up, not down

BINGO!

Im not sure what this has to do with my post? I just mentioned that If Aleague, NRL and AFL ratings all went down as the season gets on then it looks like a natural trend.

Well, our AFL friends try to sell the story that AFL does NOT trend downwards as the season gets on.

Otherwise we wouldn't have had people like Sirocco & Mister Football posting ratings figures every week gloating about declining Ratings figures in HAL.

Heck, this thread would not be 43 pages long if AFL & NRL posters didn't try to demean the HAL ratings each week during the season!

Seems to me that anyone talking about AFL figures not declining are wrong. Also anyone who takes pleasure in the decrease of Aleague ratings is probly on the wrong forum. I dont prescribe to either.

The trend may end up such that the HAL is one third the popularity of AFL on Fox, not one fifth.
Makes a big difference to leverage tv rights deal...

+1

Take away the continual chest beating of a few on here, who seem to have no interest in our game, and this thread would have very few responses. It just goes on and on, and its not even the right forum for it.

I am wondering how Foxtel work out their viewing figures;

Does a viewer just have to turn onto the channel for a few seconds for it to count as 1 view,
or does the viewer have to watch the game from start to finish?

Or is there a certain time period of watching the game before it counts as 1 view?

Because every now and then when I am watching the A-League, I flick over to fox footy for a second to see the score, so would that mean Foxtel counts it as 1 view for both fox footy and the a-league?

Quote:
OzTAM is an Australian audience measurement research firm that collects and markets television ratings data. It is jointly owned by the Seven Network, the Nine Network and Network Ten, and is the official source of television ratings data for all metropolitan television in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth as well as subscription services (such as Foxtel) on a national basis.

OzTAM was created in 1999 after the Seven and Ten Networks led a call for a re-tendering of the contract to provide audience ratings. Executives from both networks were concerned that the previous ratings service did not accurately reflect viewing levels for their channels. (Source: ABC TV The Media Report, 22 February 2001.)

Prior to OzTAM, the dominant metropolitan ratings company was Nielsen Media Research. The two companies competed for a short time, before Nielsen pulled out. Nielsen continues to be active in some regional areas.

There are ten official survey periods, of four weeks each, cover 40 weeks of the year, excluding 2 weeks over Easter and 10 weeks over summer.

SBS will market the A League in a way that it has never been done on FTA.This will mean so much

While it would be good to have a greater advertising spend by the media partner, it has to be remembered that SBS will only be advertising to approx. 6% of the TV viewership, plus whoever checks out their website, that will be a very valuable addition, not to mention much more targeted for their website traffic. I can't help but think the scope of cross promotion that could be achieved on say a TEN & ONE (combined approx. 14%) combo would reach a larger audience and help grow awareness, that's without looking closer at the demo each channel is aimed at.

But TEN are far LESS likely to agree to a marketing campaign that is anywhere near as comprehensive.
Supporting the A League, especially throughout the 2014 WC and 2015 Asian Cup would expose significantly more people to SBS's A League campaign

You make a very valid point - the potential reach on the commercial networks is, 4-6 x the SBS reach.

But, market analysts & advertisers now understand the importance of "targeted marketing/advertising".

E.g. "foreign-language films" will rate better on SBS than on commercial networks because the SBS market has a higher percentage of foreign-speaking viewers, even though they have a small % of the total Australian TV market.

In my opinion, the same occurs for the football market.

In the table below I've demonstrated that, even though SBS has only 5% of the TV market in Australia, I think there will be more potential football fans watching SBS than any commercial network.

My understanding is that Foxtel counts you as a viewer of a show if you stay tuned on a channel for 3 continuous minutes.

I would have said that Foxtel's hope that they would get lots of new subs from the Footy channel was a triumph of optimism over reality. Foxtel is not cheap and you can get a pretty good dose of AFL on FTA. If you are the type of person who might want to watch every game then you are probably a fanatical supporter of a particular club too so will be out and about watching their games live on most weekends making a subscription less attractive.

Continuing the tradition of weekly PayTv ratings updates .. strange how Sirocco & Skeptic are not as fastidious with the updates during AFL & NRL season as they were during HAL season?

Source: http://www.talkingfooty.com/tv_ratings_2012.php

Round 9 average
AFL: 170k
NR: 253k

Season average
AFL: 188k
NRL: 248k

Observations
1. AFL PayTv is plummeting each week
2. NRL PayTV is solid each week

3. On FTA TV
* AFL Ratings are so poor in Syd & Bri that 4 AFL games on 7mate didn't even record a rating!

Think what you'll see is a "correction" now that the broadcast deal has happened.
Gradually , and magically, over the next 5 years the numbers will build beautifully in time for the next media deal

Wonder if the Swans are still doing the "free entry, transport and food" thingy?
The Suns also have a pretty irresistible deal too-was it child memberships for $10, $1 to go to matches etc.Whatever it was it was virtually free

Some random thoughts in relation to these.
This has certainly been bought up before, but AFL length is generally around 3 hours long, NRL is generally 2 hours a game. Gives you more watched hours... May not be important in the grand scheme of things. One thing AFL on fox is doing well is getting the talk shows watched (AFL360 ect).
The key figures would be the subscribers in any case as I'm sure we mostly agree that is what Foxtel wanted to get out of the ALF rights was more subscribers in the southern states.

As for Point 3. That's a load of crap really. They could have been some of the better rating programs on the night, but it still wouldn't show up as it's not 5 cities watching. For example, the best watched Multi channel program on Saturday Night was FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF which got 286,000 viewers, of which 42,000 were in Sydney and 57,000 in Brisbane. However those two combined had 99,000 viewers which wouldn't have gotten it into the top 20 for multi channel programs (needed 146,000 on Sat night). Maybe Talking Footy has better stats access, but it doesnt particularly show.

Continuing the tradition of weekly PayTv ratings updates .. strange how Sirocco & Skeptic are not as fastidious with the updates during AFL & NRL season as they were during HAL season?

Source: http://www.talkingfooty.com/tv_ratings_2012.php

Round 9 average
AFL: 170k
NR: 253k

Season average
AFL: 188k
NRL: 248k

Observations
1. AFL PayTv is plummeting each week
2. NRL PayTV is solid each week

3. On FTA TV
* AFL Ratings are so poor in Syd & Bri that 4 AFL games on 7mate didn't even record a rating!

Are you saying that none of the Suns or Giants game have been broadcast to all 5 cities?

If so, there is a massive message in that alone

well spotted - there's a lot of wishful thinking going on in this thread
when people point to low ratings for Syd/Bris on 7Mate, they often don't realise that they are amongst the best ratings 7Mate is getting for that weekend for those two cities.

if people on here want to believe that AFL attendances and ratings are plummeting, but they are both massive, no other sport comes close
