Search for " holland uruguay 1974" on youtube. It's by "sebfootball". (sorry don't know how to link it)

This is currently my favourite football video. It was Holland's first match of the 74 world cup and some so-called modern tactics are very much in evidence albeit in a less structured way than today.

The tactics include:

Pressing in the opposition half. The Dutch attempt tackles one straight after the other till they win it back leading to...

Quick transition defence to attack. The dutch win it back in the opposition half and head straight to goal.

A high defensive line - see how often the Uruguayans were caught offside in large numbers as the Dutch defence sprint forward after their forwards have lost the ball. The Uruguayans have 6 players offside at a time.

The chipped pass over the packed defence - often attributed to futsal.

Overlapping fullbacks.

But best of all they played a game which was simply beautiful.

Maslov and Valery Lobanovski, the great Ukrainian coach, may have used full pressing or squeezing even a little before Rinus Michaels.

He coined it in KNVB methodology, which the Dutch national team adopted.
